pecans are the superior nut in any case.

Not the original commenter you answered โ€ฆ but proud to say I made a peanut โ€œjokeโ€, saw the discussion had gone on my longer than I realized, with the same joke being made several times, so I promptly went back and deleted my comment. Iโ€™ve never been sad about deleting lame jokes on social media.

I would say that if you can get your hands on fresh walnuts (Persian shops are usually a good bet), they might change your mind. Theyโ€™re a whole different animal and remind me of maple walnut ice cream. They lack that bitter tannin flavour.

Pecans are basically miracles. We have 3 pecan trees on our very small property, and the last time we had a good crop (3 years ago), we got something like 50 pounds of pecans raining from skies. We're still working our way though them; it turns out they come with the shells on, which slows us down.

Hazelnuts are as well. The American varieties have not been bred for size like the European/commercial variety, but Corylus Americana and Corylus Cornuta would have been up their with American Chestnuts for availability to early colonists.

I donโ€™t Iโ€™m afraid. My experience is almost entirely my 3 year old bushes from the local native plant org. I got a largish handful of nuts this year.

Remember, it's pronounced " pee' cans' ". At least, that's the proper way to pronounce the word where I came from.

We always thought that other pronunciation was a little pretentious, perhaps what may be considered a little too precious and most likely imported from somewhere up north of Macon.

2) is the big problem, because they're so fatty they go rancid quicker and drag the whole can of mixed nuts down with them.

Nobody buys Brazil nuts on their own, yet their proportions ruin mixed bites of mixed nuts. I'd 100% argue you can't claim the top spot if you can't stand on your own!

Yule Never Walk Alone

"So enjoying a few Brazil nuts each day is safe โ€“ just avoid eating excessive amounts all at once! Did you know? The daily selenium target (RDI) can be achieved with just two Brazil nuts. And around seven Brazil nuts provides the upper limit for selenium (400ยตg/day). 2/2

Shelling macadamia nuts is far worse; similarly obdurate shell, but also SPHERICAL. Sandwiched between oil change sheets and running a car back and forth over them does not result in 100% cracked shells. By comparison, brazil nuts can be cracked with a hammer kr a strong nut cracker.

Almonds are the worst. I will choose pecans, walnuts, pistachios, peanuts, pepitas, hazelnuts, pine nuts, virtually anything first. Flaked and toasted for texture in a salad is the only format I can be bothered with. I wonโ€™t even talk about how almond paste is the syphilis of the pastry world

It's an interesting exercise to try to figure out which things you like and take for granted would and wouldn't be tenable in an economy that worked to benefit everyone.

In my speculative anarchist/socialist utopia, I imagine more video games than you'd think, but certainly less chocolate.

Mistletoe and Whine

I suppose that all depends on whether we can offset the damage done by the mining of minerals for computer parts. If Iโ€™m gonna have to give up my PC for a life of cards and scrabble and canโ€™t even console myself with a tub of chocolate ice cream istg Iโ€™m coming for the head of capitalism myself

Actually, none of these are nuts, you know. Peanuts are legumes. Pistachios are simply seeds with an enclosure, and pecans are drupes. On the other hand, acorns, chestnuts, and hazelnuts are actually nuts. I think the most popular "nuts" are all drupes (pecans, walnuts, almonds, cashews).

anyone who'd love to buy this year's pecan crop direct from the orchard, I'd love to suggest www.limestonecreekpecans.com . I've been a happy customer since discovering him a few years ago on that other place we all used to hang out at. Fresher and tastier than grocery store pecans.

Peanuts? Blech, too pasty and mould contaminated and they're not even nuts.

You are correct, however, with your rating of pistachios. Pecans, I am ambivalent on, depends on the application.

But what about macadamia nuts? Those fatty little treasures deserve some love too.
