Obscenely expensive, unnecessary and counters the spirit of the nuclear test ban that the US have not ratified (and is not yet in force after 28 years)

Costs for modernisation of US nuclear arsenal are exploding. Literally trillions of dollars that could—if deterrence fails—go up in smoke, taking the world with them.

Costs are skyrocketing to modernize the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Instead of turning a blind eye, Congress should demand fiscal oversight and make hard decisions balancing costs with deterrence

History is full of reinterpretations that will be reinterpreted once again later on when there is more declassification. There are merits for believing both positions, scare and no scare.
Here it is: my review of Annie Jacobsen's book "Nuclear War. A Scenario".

Book review of "Nuclear War. A Scenario" by Annie Jacobsen I had heard some criticism of Annie Jacobsen’s book “Nuclear War” before I even bought it. But also, lots of people were raving about it, so ...

She could have written a trilogy: 1. Nuclear war 2. The Devil's Scenario 3. Nuclear Blackout.
I read the book despite the criticisms I read before. It is a real horror story and a veritable page-turner. But I just think it could have been done better.
That was my first thought as well. But this book is meant to be read by a very wide audience and would have done well to be more focussed on the central issue of what the consequences of nuclear war would actually look like, rather than covering multiple threats.
Then adding more and more fuel to the fire. Do we need the add-ons like striking a nuclear power plant or exploding an EMP device in the atmosphere. What is wrong with just plain old nuclear war? It would be bad enough.
I have to write a review of it, so would be interested in more specific criticism than just "nuke porn". My biggest problem is that too many things go wrong all at once without any plausible explanation. The original strike - why? Would the Russians really react just because POTUS didn't call?
The Palestinian flag and keffiyeh belong to the people of Palestine and not Hamas or any other sub-grouping. It is OK to be pro-Palestinian. It is not per se antisemitic to support Palestine. It is not even anti-Israel if you support a two-state solution.
Follow-up repost on Adnan Bursh: why does Israel not release his body?
One thing the Reuters story fails to mention, which I just learned, is that Israel refuses to release the body of Dr. Al-Bursh, despite releasing the body of another man who also died in an Israeli prison.
As a tea-totaller (British euphemism for alcohol-abstinent) who also LOVES coffee, it would interest me to know: how many people drink more than 2 cups of coffee a day?
How cool is that 😎
Ghassan Abu Sitta, British surgeon working in Gaza, writes: the Israeli army took Dr Adnan Bursh, head of orthopedic surgery at Shifa, hostage from Al Awda hospital. Tortured him to death in a secret detention site. He was a great surgeon, full of life. Trained at King's College Hospital.

Agreed. But at the risk of being a party pooper: nuclear disarmament is only significant when they are all gone. We still have enough to wipe out civilisation forever. And even one would have catastrophic consequences the like of which you have never seen.
My analysis: France repeatedly makes these vague offers af nuclear sharing (with no actual sharing). Successive German governments keep ignoring these overtures, but lone politicians still flogging the dead horse called the #Eurobomb, hoping to score election points:

As he gets tougher on Russia, French president urges discussion on idea of using France’s nuclear warheads to defend the EU.
www.politico.euThis is only half the story. Russia introduced an amendment which was further-reaching, to ban all weapons in outer space, sayin that the Outer Space Treaty does not just ban WMDs. The amendment split the council 7 to 7, the US and UK voting against. More here: press.un.org/en/2024/sc15...
