Here's the back of the Donkey Kong, Jr. Cereal box...Takea gander at the baseball cards that could be found inside! Look at these beauts! 1983 baseball in all it's muted, contact-hitting glory...
Donkey Kong Junior Cereal (1983-1984): A promotional tie-in for the arcade/video game, this cereal came in banana and berry-shaped pieces, and featured a "wild fruit flavor." Pack-in premiums included baseball cards, a Pez dispenser, and a DK Junior-themed activity book
Please don't sully teal by associating it with this abomination
I think we all have a tendency to put on rose-colored glasses when we look back on design trends/aesthetics from the past, and usually with a softened heart or some affection, even for the terrible stuff. But the "Affliction" aesthetic may be the absolute worst design creation of all time.
TILT (2005-circa 2011): A neon-colored alcoholic energy drink from Anheuser-Busch, which contained caffeine and ginseng, as well as upwards of 10-12% alcohol by volume in some flavors. Caffeine removed in 2010. Available in flavors such as cherry, orange, grape, lime and tropical fruit
Keebler Cookie Stix (1997-2001): Keebler cookies (such as Chips Deluxe, Rainbow Chips Deluxe, and more) in "stick" form, marketed as an easier way to dunk in milk
"Consumers will appreciate our refreshing honesty!"
Reminds of when they'll launch a product, then like 4 months later it has a new label that says something like "Now tastes even better!" or "new, improved taste!" Like, oops someone got some poor consumer feedback haha
Pillsbury Toaster Muffins (1986-circa 1988): Trying to expand their line of toastable breakfast treats, Pillsbury released these blueberry toaster cakes with a muffiny texture
That whole scene is so incredibly funny, Mel Brooks is a treasure
Ok, you know what? This is now officially a "Little Rascals" (1994) appreciation post.
Little Rascals Chocolate Chip Kookies (1994-1994): Bite-sized chocolate chip cookies, excuse me, "kookies", released to promote the 1994 "Little Rascals" movie
MANY!!! I've covered a few here, and probably a couple dozen on Twitter, with dozens left to cover still! And that doesn't even touch the candy bars, sauces, peanut butter, and more!
This is a different Jake the Snake haha...the one you posted is Jake Plummer (who also had his own cereal). The one I posted in Jake Delhomme. Same nickname, both had frosted flakes...confusing!!
Jake's Flakes (2004-2005): At the start of what would be his best statistical season, and following a Super Bowl loss, Carolina Panther's QB Jake Delhomme received his own cereal--frosted corn flakes, with a portion of sales going to the Special Olympics
Oh I'm sure! I always enjoy what Milka puts out so I bet this is great
That was a seasonal item, I think last year may have been the first year they did it. We'll see if they bring it back this year. I'm sure they were probably tasty, chocolate-covered Ritz are excellent. BUT, this product here was UK CADBURY chocolate, which probably took it to a whole different level
Covered this on Twitter a while back, it'll show up here eventually :-)
Cadbury Ritz Dairy Milk (2014-2018): A UK-only release, this bar featured buttery Ritz crackers, embedded in squares of Cadbury milk chocolate
Yeah, they aren't doing anything wrong haha...that kinda seems uncalled for. I was just pointing out how their style/vibe very distinctly reminds me SO much of the people I'd see our and about in the city in 2013!
The invite says "2023", but that is a "2013" couple if ever there was one.
D'Lites of America (1978-1987): A chain of fast food restaurants, marketing healthier, nutritious options such as reduced fat burgers, low calorie cheese, a salad bar, and high fiber buns. Ironically, almost all locations were turned into Hardee's.
Very very little is known about it, but I'd wager is was paying for the branding
Two little notes on Teddy Soft Bakes:
1. The mold and filling are still used, and sold as "Barny" in the UK
2. They would make absolutely killer "bread" for an ice cream sandwich
Teddy Soft Bakes (2017-2019): A spin-off from the Teddy Grahams lineup, these spongy, bear-shaped snack cakes were about the size of a child's hand and came in vanilla with chocolate filling, or chocolate with vanilla filling
Needs more clipart of crosshairs and bitmap American flags!!
I like that they have really committed to the "Geocities webpage in 2001" aesthetic for all their fundraising announcements
That's a microgenre of #3, featuring Jamie Lee Curtis on backing vocals
To be fair, we as Americans have an embarrassment of yogurt riches. Just consider the main Yogurt Subtypes in the 90's:
1. X-Treme
2. Decadent
3. Educational
4. Avec Sprinkles
As far as I know, I believe this was a UK only release, possibly elsewhere in Europe...do any Americans remember seeing this at the time? Any UK followers try it during it's brief run?
Cosmopolitan Yogurt (1999-2001): The legacy women's lifestyle magazine decided to branch out into the dairy case, releasing a line of higher-priced yogurt, branded as “sophisticated and with an aspirational nature” which only lasted around 18 months.
I 100% believed the elephant one, I'm sure I heard it from one of my goofy friends haha
Dino-Smores Pebbles Cereal (2008-2009): A spin-off of the "Pebbles" line, featuring the Flintstone's pet, Dino. Cocoa and graham-cracker flavored cereal pieces shaped like bones and nuggets, along with "marshmallow boulders".
Lay's Chinese Szechuan Chicken Chips (2016-2016): Part of the Passport to Flavor series, these potato chips were flavored with soy sauce, garlic and actual Sichuan peppers
It really was!! I think early 3-D games in general really lent themselves to that, given the exploratory nature
All of my friends and I believed that there was a whole other side of the island to play through in Donkey Kong Country
