Someone said that, before firearms, history was a constant back-and-forth battle between a human+wheat/rice symbiosis and a human/horse symbiosis
I think Trump's *real* strength is among previously unideological low-propensity voters that basically like him because they were fans of the Apprentice. There, he's kind of sui generis
Might be better than the alternatives. Let's try to rely on it as little as possible
His work was academically pretty sloppy and he got over his skis, a lot of what he's saying is sort of unfalsifiable. I think he's probably broadly correct
Urbanists who dismiss EVs as a distraction need to get real: we need to accelerate their adoption while also redesigning our cities. Our future depends on both happening
To meet emissions targets “ridiculously [celebratory] high levels of electrification” are needed, he said. “We also, at the same time, need to be building the types of communities that enable folks to move around without needing to rely on a car”

The fact it took a couple hundred years after horses showed up for them to reasonably emulate what Asian steppe nomads had been doing for millennia suggests that human society recapitulates itself pretty quickly based on whatever technology is available
Unhealthy of me to be closely following the Seattle dodge hellcat sociopath story. Doesn't help anyone
Chances are, for at least one of these techs, we'll identify and address every roadblock and then we'll have something much better than we have today
... I expect that at least one of these research programs will eventually yield something considerably better than we have now. Scientists have identified a lot of very promising technologies and chemistries, all currently with some show-stopping drawbacks.
But, reasons for optimism: the battery research program "black boxes" have, in aggregate, returned outcomes as a function of how much money was put into them. And recently we've been pumping a couple orders of magnitude more into them than we did when we first discovered li-ion. So...
I dunno! I'm not an expert at all here. I look at these kinds of research programs as kind of black boxes where money goes in and, with some probability of success, manufacturable technology comes out. As far as the probabilities go, it's a bayesian function of opinions of various actual experts
Sometimes a completely unhinged rando wanders into your mentions. Online is great
Amazed how sweaty and frothing mad I've made a total stranger on the internet by posting a joke
It costs like $1-3k each to replace, so a couple dedicated dudes can easily run multiple literal millions of dollars of damages. Do the math, this Portland ring might have cost car owners a billion dollars!
Weren't they ideologically and intellectually rooted in, like, neo-Trotskyism or something? Never read too much into that at the time of their peak influence, but seemed like some real weird shit
I think these might have been related! The Portland one was sending off their loot to NJ in shipping containers to a metal recycler there and they nailed him, I suspect he was doing this for other regional crime rings, and I'd bet he was happy to roll on them
Someone needs to have an intervention! Just checked out her blog and she's still writing a bunch of coherent, and AFAICT, largely correct stuff.
It wouldn't be good, but it would be very funny, if the DEA wrote up search warrants for every person person who received any venmo payments containing both the ❄️ and 🔌 emojis
Just walked by a drug deal (mushrooms) on SE Hawthorne and the dealer was loudly explaining that they pay via venmo and they can be reached on instagram if they want anymore anytime they want. What a world
To be clear, the Portland Police didn't do this, it took suburban police departments to pull this off
This happened in Portland. Virtually every stolen catalytic converter was being fenced by some dudes in Lake Oswego. Just had to catch a couple people in the act and flip them, then get the search warrants and send a few dudes to jail
The thousands of catalytic converters, stolen since early last year, had an estimated street value of more than $22 million.
www.opb.orgSome large portion of property crime could probably be solved if police did their jobs and proactively investigated these things. How many "crime rings" are just "meth addicts know a guy who fences a certain kind of thing they can steal". We're not talking about the Bell/Barksdale crew here
A carpenter deployed GPS devices to track his tools after thieves stole from him twice, helping lead Maryland investigators to millions of dollars worth of pilfered equipment.
A carpenter with GPS devices hidden in his stolen tools helped lead Howard County investigators to millions of dollars worth of pilfered equipment.
www.washingtonpost.comAFAICT she is still writing some very good legal analysis, today! It's just that she's been kind of beefing with people who disagree with her about some shit in a non-constructive way
She's actually done a lot of super great analysis over her career but I'm sorry to say that we're seeing a sad case of late-onset poster's madness
Oklo is the only part of the new-build nuclear industry I harbor even slight optimism about. We'll see if they get through the regulatory gauntlet and get any reactors built
US-based Oklo has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Wyoming Hyperscale to supply 100 MWe to a state-of-the-art data…
www.neimagazine.comI'm glad I haven't gone down that rabbit hole, this stuff seems insufferable
Yeah for whatever reason–I'm not a blacksmith or metallurgist–he hasn't got metal that he can forge. It shattered when he tried. Maybe he'll get there!
Anyone else watch the Primitive Technology guy on youtube? It's just one dude, speedrunning the neolithic revolution on his own. I really hope he reaches his goal of forging usable iron tools using only things he's found in the woods

The previous blower design is tear drop shaped so that the direction that the fan spins is un important. Also with the previous design the impeller spins one way and then the other as it is powered by a simple string mechanism. In the new design, a weight was employed in the form of a heavy log attached to the rotor. The top of the rotor is held and the weight spun to create rotation. This method produces less rpm than the original but allows the fan to be spun continuously in one direction only. To compensate for the lower rpm, the fan was doubled in size (from 25 cm to 50 cm) to increase blade tip speed and so air speed. Now with a fan that spins in one direction only, a housing could be used to take advantage of this fact. A volute is an expanding spiral and housing for fans that are volute shaped help guide the air from the center to the outlet more efficiently than a tear drop shaped one. This was made using mud on the ground as opposed to a clay portable one as it was starting to get too big to transport. The fan was tested in an iron smelt. Disappointingly, it only produced a bit of iron in the form of much smaller prills than usual due to the low rpm and hence air pressure than the original blower. After some rough calculations from research, this design might become competitive with the original blower if the fan diameter was scaled up to 1m diameter from the original 25 cm diameter fan. The advantage of this design is that it is simpler and has fewer components than the original as there is no string that needs replacing. The dis advantage is that for it to produce good pressure it's diameter needs to be scaled up to the point where it is no longer compact and portable. About Primitive Technology: Primitive technology is a hobby where you build things in the wild completely from scratch using no modern tools or materials. These are the strict rules: If you want a fire, use a fire stick - An axe, pick up a stone and shape it - A hut, build one from trees, mud, rocks etc. The challenge is seeing how far you can go without utilizing modern technology. I do not live in the wild, but enjoy building shelter, tools, and more, only utilizing natural materials. To find specific videos, visit my playlist tab for building videos focused on pyrotechnology, shelter, weapons, food & agriculture, tools & machines, and weaving & fiber. #PrimitiveTechnology #volute #fireblower

I don't like Manchin and I don't like Sinema but it's really baffling how people act like 50 Republican Senators have no agency whatsoever
Speaking of wriggling out of jams, what happened with that big New York civil lawsuit judgement? I was told he was going to be sleeping in a cardboard box on the street by now
