It was cloudy all day here in PA. 45 minutes before totality, the clouds opened up to blue sky. 10 min before, it clouded up again but you could see the sun. From 30 sec before totality to about a minute after, the clouds were too thick and blocked the sun. An hour later, it was blue skies again

Once when high in suburbia, we saw lights panning across the sky in the clouds. A white circle of light. We were convinced it was an alien encounter. Then we saw the beam...coming from the city. They we big event sky lights.
Morning shine on shore with buffleheads, a lovely way to start the day. Sunrise was hidden behind a low band of clouds in an otherwise mostly blue sky.

A lot of the photos you're seeing have a black background because the camera was behind a safety lens. In reality, the sky was blue grey, like in this photo. Then imagine the light source is an ink black sun with an ultra bright halo behind it. That was totality.
