continues to be hilarious that the position of the modern GOP is "we're the party of Lincoln!" but also "the civil war wasn't about slavery and the South had some good points!"

"Democrats were the real slave owners. Also, tearing down Confederate statues is erasing our history."
Whitewashing of history is the erasure of history. Tearing down Confederate statues is not.
The civil war wasn't about slavery but democrats did slavery and that's why Republicans fought and won the civil war that wasn't about slavery.
"The war wasn't necessary" is some of the most pernicious pro-slavery/confederate propaganda out there. This has been studied to death. Well before the Civil War, the slave states had started to shore up the the system of slavery because of the British Blockage of Africa!
Republicans: Democrats are the party of confederates!
Democrats: Fine, we are taking down our statues.
Republicans: NO!!! THAT'S OUR HERITAGE!!! SLAVE OWNERS WERE GREAT AMERICAN HEROES!!!
The "Lost Cause of the Confederacy" is a read of history that the Civil War wasn't really about slavery, but was a necessary war to solve the problems of States' rights and economic disparity between North and South.
I keep thinking about how the debate about Confederate flags and statues over the last decade and a century of the Lost Cause narrative has completely eroded our understanding of history to the point that a candidate for President is afraid to say the civil war was about slavery
If you plot the erecting of confederate statues over time, the peak is about 1910. The statues were not about Lee or whomever they depicted but about how to holdthe old South up and powerful and the black people down in the 20th century. That is part of US history.
The Civil War was 100% about slavery, and not even that abolition of slavery was imminent, but that the newborn Republican Party, whose platform was to end slavery eventually at some point down the road, succeeded in getting Lincoln elected.
it's been replaced by total denial of the party switch
"yeah the civil war was about slavery, but the DEMOCRATS were the slavers"
it's always amusing (in a horrifying way) to see Republicans simultaneously claim that theirs is the party of Lincoln, the Democrats are the party of slavery today, AND that the Confederates weren't actually the bad guys in the Civil War
"It wasn't about slavery. But the Unionist regions of the South were the mountainous areas that didn't rely on a slave economy, for some reason."
I went to Catholic school in the north and we were taught that slavery was the cause of the civil war but we were also taught about states’ rights in the context of the civil war.
Chime in with your age, where you went to school, and what you were taught about the Civil War.
Like, all the confederate statues we were finally pulling down and the daughters of the confederacy growing into mothers of the confederacy, stem from not holding slave owners accountable
Lincoln was a Republican—in the 1800’s. That party was closer to modern Democrats. Not equal to, but the two parties basically switched places between the end of the Civil War and the New Deal sealed it. Lincoln would recognize a Confederate like we recognize Nazis.
Hi we’re the GOP, the party of Lincoln. Anyway, we’re threatening to start a civil war over our perceived right to persecute non-white people
It would also have to include an element of “Democrats are worse.”
It’s essential. They are committed to the scriptural truth that Democrats remain the party of slavery. It’s incoherent, like the wingnut stance on Confederate statues. But they figured out long ago that coherence is irrelevant.
But see, Decl. of Causes of Seceding States:
GA: "The party of Lincoln ... is admitted to be an anti-slavery party."
MS: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery"
SC: "they have denounced as sinful the institution of slavery"
A human bare minimum should be: "Slavery Is Bad." and "The Civil War Was About Slavery." Were there other factors in the Civil War? Sure. Was everyone in the North good and pure? Of course not. But the South's 'state's rights' were about slavery, and slavery IS bad. This really isn't that hard.
Just like Democrats are both the racist party of slavery and the Confederacy—and also the leftist wackos who want to remove Confederate statues.
They do this and they get away with it.
Trumpf assumes crowd knows nothing about the Civil War. LMAO. Lincoln created the Civil War to cement his Legacy in History. If only Lincoln could have made the Slave Owners be a little bit nicer to the Slaves, the Civil War doesn't happen. Biden is losing to this guy. youtu.be/M53IJ-aT238?...

youtu.beMAGA: The “Party of Lincoln”, except with slavery and Confederate flags.
This guy probably also thinks that the Civil War wasn’t about slavery.
Confederate names? As in the civil war and slave owners and all that? Why?? 😳
The talking point about “Southern Democrats were the real slave-owners” must have gone out on some kind of mailing list today, because I’m suddenly seeing it everywhere.
The Republicans were actually the good guys in the Civil War, you see. Checkmate, libs.
