the tribal class was great, I picked up a bunch of books in Inverness earlier this week - one on the travails of HMS Kelly, HMS Campbeltown (raid on St Nazaire) and some on cruisers, escort carriers and attempts to make hybrid battleship-carriers

I believe there are still 2 US carriers sat off the coast. I reckon that would be sufficient escort.
29/3/42. The German destroyer Z26 sinking following an engagement with the escort of convoy PQ13. The cruiser HMS Trinidad and destroyer HMS Eclipse had inflicted fatal damage before the latter was driven off by two of Z26’s sister ships. They rescued 88 men, but 243 were lost.

But those are basically escort carriers by another name anyway.
6/3 1940. The German cargo ship SS Hannover was intercepted off the Dominican Republic by the cruiser HMS Dunedin and destroyer HMCS Assiniboine. Despite attempts to scuttle her, she was boarded and salvaged. Hannover would become HMS Audacity, the Royal Navy’s first escort carrier.
