i am once again asking if the data they're getting is worth pulling the plug in half the available countries for the LIVE SERVICE GAME that kind of relies on multiple people all playing at the same time
It seems to be simple number inflation on PSN accounts and their presence in the PC space, not the data (as anyone can just make a burner account to keep playing)

I strongly believe it was the refunds that did it.
The only other time I can recall Sony doing something like this was when CDPR volunteered them to give refunds of Cyberpunk 2077 at launch. Sony did not like that and pulled it from sale.

I would love to see follow-up exploration into the way Arrowhead and the game's community treated the community managers. Johan Pilestedt gets infinite forgiveness while CMs get targeted by Reddit & have to babysit a pressure-cooker Discord until they're bullied into hiding.

Choose to believe whatever you want about the Helldivers 2 situation. I think someone at Arrowhead did a malicious compliance and Sony seeing just how many countries they can't sell the game in if they require PSN accounts was the final straw.
Watching the Helldivers 2 drama from afar I just feel so much for the Arrowhead devs. Good on players for getting Sony to backtrack. Just sad the people who made a great game got caught in the middle.

3 months after the game came out they are requiring everyone to link it to a Sony Playstation account even on PC. Which includes people in countries where you can't make a Sony account who now just can't play the game
Leave it to Sony to fuck over players over and over. Now that helldivers 2 is popular. They are fucking over people who bought the game months after release. Not once did they enforce the Sony account login. Now it's going to be enforced. Making thousands of players unable to play.

Bought Helldivers 2, but haven't been able to log in because the servers are overloaded (so happy for Arrowhead and their success with this follow up - insane how the Nordic countries are now at the forefront of game dev).

Aaaaand I wake up learning that Sony has once again tricked the Helldivers 2 community and that now that PSN is no longer required they have made it to there literally only 9% of countries on the planet that can play the video game... people are gonna write books and YouTube essays on this for years
PSN is only available in 69 countries, leaving over a hundred nations, including the Vatican, without access. I guess the pope is gonna have to stop playing Helldivers 2.

(For context Joel is a live Game Master for Helldivers 2 manually plotting and planning what story goes on in the game)

And people aren't just saying "Oh yea I can't use my friend's pawns" No, they can't play the actual fucking game. If you get banned in Dragon's Dogma 2, a single player game that by default should be offline, you can't play the game.

Sony, the publisher, tried to force some bad Executive Meddling on the game.
Arrowhead, the dev studio, literally asked players to review bomb their own game and refund it to fight back, and Sony caved. The absolute mad lads
Regarding the PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 announcement, while for me personally it's not a big deal, I also think that Sony should at least give refunds for people living in countries that cannot create legit PSN accounts but have bought the game currently. They deserve that much at least.

Whenever there's a game with multiplayer issues at launch (in this case, Helldivers 2) people like to trot out the now 10-year-old Halo: Master Chief Collection review thinking it's a total own, not realizing that they're just telling on themselves for having not read even the first paragraph.
Basically, I made a little Helldivers-like game in the time I've spent just sitting trying to play actual Helldivers. I think it's pretty fun too (both this game and the video game, lol)!
Helldivers 2 has been out in the Wild for over a week! I am so honored, proud and humbled to be part of the design team at Arrowhead on this game and look forward to our players liberating the galaxy for Super Earth!
