"Surveillance of [highly pathogenic avian influenza] HPAI viruses in domestic production animals, including cattle, is needed to elucidate influenza virus evolution and ecology and prevent cross-species transmission."
"The recurring nature of global ... H5N1 virus outbreaks and detection of spillover events in a broad host range is concerning and suggests increasing virus adaptation in mammals," the researchers wrote.

Avian flu has spread to dairy cattle in Texas.
Livestock at multiple dairy farms across the U.S. have tested positive for bird flu. It's the first time the disease has been found in dairy cattle.
Livestock in Texas, Kansas and Michigan are confirmed to have the virus, and herds in New Mexico and Idaho have also tested positive. The threat to the public is low, federal officials say.

Scientists saw minor differences between the human specimens and the cattle samples and that the viruses had avian characteristics.

Cohen: First time we've seen avian flu, or "bird flu," in cattle. Cows are mammals, so this is a new reservoir or a group of animals we see this virus in. Means more opportunity for virus to mutate & change. And that's what we want to make sure we are continuing to stay ahead of.

CDC director Dr. Mandy Cohen tells NPR that while the risk of bird flu spreading to humans is low, the U.S. government is taking precautions to avoid spread of the virus.

now you just need to worry about
avian influenza and bovine influenza
and, of course, Covid too.
Canada to test milk for H5N1 avian flu after harmless traces found in U.S. cattle
H5N1 has not yet been found in cows in Canada, but some doctors and scientists worry cases may have been missed because officials have been waiting for farmers and field veterinarians to report symptoms in cattle, rather than actively hunting for the virus
