Look at that fucking Seiken 3 art. Absolutely unreal that it was on the SNES. Just a total mastery of 16-bit pixel art.
I'm sorry but I'm always going to be partial to Seiken Densetsu 2, it's not that 3 wasn't gorgeous (it was) but just that 2 is the game that perfectly nailed a very unique fantasy aesthetic where suddenly antics fall away in favor of awe at light and color in natural spaces.
Fair, yeah. I absolutely love 2's aesthetics as well. And it's arguably even more impressive relative to the era it came out of. Only 1993, and so far ahead of anything Square had done before visually. Really set the pace for that wave of god tier pixel art from them in the SNES's later years.
It was 2 that was the really big one for me at the time, too. Was one of the few pre-FFVII Square games we got here in Europe, and saw a friend flying around the world map on an endgame save in the 90s. Stuck with me for years, and was the first SNES game I downloaded when I discovered emulation.
Was easily one of the most mindblowing graphical moments I had through that entire generation. Especially as a Sega kid who hadn't seen much of the whole Mode 7 pseudo-3D effect to that point.
Yeah, I don't want to sideline 3 by any means (I feel like it gets forgotten a lot because it didn't get a wider release for years), but 2 is a beloved game for a reason. It chose to have colorful, light-hearted antics... that blossomed into reverent scenes of bright, natural beauty easily.
In many ways my love of 2 comes from how it isn't appreciated enough for these messages. Many of Square's RPGs are about fixing a fallen world in this era, but SoM/SD2 says that the world in its natural state is good and beautiful and worth preserving, even if we sometimes forget about it.
Find myself thinking of that title screen. The whale sounds, and the massive tree towering over the tiny heroes. It always carried this sense of reverence and awe at the grandeur of the natural world for me as a kid.
There have been numerous times while hiking when I've come across such a beautiful moment, a hidden little spot of moss and plant life, and I've found myself almost subconsciously whistling the notes of the title theme.
Oh god yeah, 100%. Ditto to A Wish immediately running through my head any time I'm out walking in the snow. Some enormously evocative songs on the soundtrack.
Sleeping at the inn in SNES JRPGs 😴
1. Chrono Trigger
2. Final Fantasy 6
3. Secret of Mana
4. Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana
Admiring the view 😊
1. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
2. Trials of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)
3. Final Fantasy 5 (SNES)
4. Illusion of Gaia (SNES)
For a bit of context, the untranslated name of that series is "Seiken Densetsu", the first game was released outside Japan under the Final Fantasy name (Adventure)
So, Secret of Mana is "Seiken Densetsu 2"
(And Trials is a remake of Seiken Densetsu 3)

Well well well... we finished that game, but it took longer than I thought. Now for next week, we're gonna start on the Seiken Densetsu / Mana series!
Everyone knows Secret of Mana (SD 2) but not Final Fantasy Adventure / Mystic Quest (SD1) or Trials of Mana (SD3) so I'm gonna start on those!
Trials of Mana has officially been named Trials of Mana for nearly 5 years now, but I still have to stop myself from calling it Seiken Densetsu 3 in conversations.
Have you had the chance to play Chrono Trigger? Probably my favorite Squaresoft SNES game next to FF VI and Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana series)
I’m pretty sure that Hiroki Kikuta, composer of Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) was influenced by this album.
