Sufficiency, climate action, and ecosystem restoration in North East Finland. Board member of a district heat company and vice-chair of Joensuun Latu outdoor club. 🤠🌲🎣 🇫🇮
@enog.bsky.social The first fish on the Centric. Although a seven-weight might be required if the fish get any bigger than this! 😉
Finnish GHG emissions decreased 11 % in 2023 due to wind and nuclear power additions to the grid.
”Pikaennakon mukaiset kasvihuonekaasujen kokonaispäästöt ilman maankäyttösektoria olivat 40,6 miljoonaa tonnia CO₂-ekv. vuonna 2023 vastaten 11 %:n laskua edellisvuodesta.” stat.fi/julkaisu/clm...
I wrote a blog once that began with a reference to the Global Carbon Project data, 1.5°C carbon budget studies, and ended up with smoked pikeperch and bog skiing.
It's not considerate for senior people and others with medical conditions, especially without A/C even in the Nordics to portray this as some sort of a beach holiday. I'm seriously worried about my mother.
"The numerous lakes and rivers make the Inari Hiking Area perfect for fly fishing as well as ice fishing (...) And what could taste better than self-caught and freshly cooked whitefish or grayling?"
Nothing.

Hmm, I'm putting this place on the June agenda.

www.nationalparks.fiI was in the media a few years back on the climate message, which felt uncomfortable but necessary. Old friends treat you differently when the publicity comes.
Sleeping at 27-28°C was uncomfortable with a migraine (nowadays get one in a few years), but at least I'm not getting bombed, fighting an invasion, being flooded, or expecting over 50°C in the daytime. Yay. #Modernity
I had no issues with the hooks since the outer shell is tough nylon. The pontoons are inside of it.
Air-mass thunderstorms are popping up in Liperi. A welcome cooling effect during the heatwave! ⛈️

IPPR research examines transport emissions by income, gender, location, ethnicity and age
www.theguardian.comA coffee, I meant to say. This heatwave is messing up my comms.
I have only one board meeting left before the June trip to the Arctic so a cafe at solar powered Rento is in order. #Joensuu 😎
The new forms of low-carbon energy and critical minerals should not be ”unleashed” in the same way hydropower and biomass were utilized. There are real societal and biodiversity trade-offs.
And almost every economy and business article should have a climate and biodiversity angle.
Mainstream media outlets should hire full-time climate reporters who can provide context for individual articles and also explore unsexy topics like heat pumps and electric bus scaling.
It turns out my lake trawler has suffered catastrophic hull damage. It has been in operation for ten years.
A new drifter costs about 300 euros so I’ll strip the old one for spare parts!

"Nowhere is the world’s biodiversity crisis more acute than in freshwater ecosystems. Around 35% of wetlands have been lost in the past 50 years and only 1/3 of the world’s large rivers are still free-flowing." #Biodiversity www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/...

"The all-time record high of 37 degrees Celsius is still some way off, but Tuomola says the May record of 31 degrees Celsius is likely to be broken on Wednesday."
yle.fi/a/74-20091012
In May daily average temperatures are normally 10 degrees lower throughout the day.
yle.fiThe proper heatwave has begun in North Karelia. I’m thinking about the winter when the temperatures were similar but with a minus sign in front of them. 🥵 #Heatwave
I was a bit hesitant to go skiing today because it was -28°C in the morning but now I’m really glad that I did. Three kilometers from my house! 🤠❄️
”A combination of meltwater puddles evaporating quickly and little precipitation this spring makes it more difficult for mosquitoes to reproduce.” 🤔 yle.fi/a/74-20090590

It seems likely that this May will be close to record-breaking hot. We don't have those megafires like Canada and the U.S. but it's still a lot of work for the fire fighters.

Hehe, I told my physiotherapist that I’ve been working with climate stuff. An interesting discussion ensued about recycling, electric vehicles and negative environmental emotions.
I gave the usual #Sufficiency pitch and she seemed genuinely interested.
Yup, and it's almost a month until the shortest night or nearly no night, even at our latitudes.
Joensuu is pleasant especially in the summer because cycling and walking are prioritised.
The Pielinen River runs through the city and spawning areas have been restored for the migratory lake salmon! #Joensuu 🐟🚲
I can, because there is no phone connection to where I'm going in June.
The sun rises at 3.30 am and sets at 10.30 pm on my latitudes right now! 😎
Better yet, run in municipal politics. It can be very tough but the decisions are tangible. We just got the eastern most wind power site because also the moderate right and the agrarians supported it.
”Climate change is expected to boost the chances of air turbulence, and make it more intense. In fact, some research indicates turbulence has already worsened over the past few decades.” theconversation.com/are-some-rou...
With severe injuries from turbulence on a recent Singapore Airlines flight, questions abound over why airplanes encounter this phenomenon and whether climate change really will make it worse.

www.rte.ieThere is very limited space for overconsumption if we choose to follow this logic, and we should because it is based on physical science and the Paris Agreement. bsky.app/profile/aarn...
Yes, that is the equity framing of the Paris Agreement in terms of the carbon budget: each probability to remain below a temperature threshold allocates a limited amount of emissions to burn before essentially zero carbon dioxide emissions from energy.
Who uses it and for what is key.
At least for myself sufficiency isn’t about fantastic new green products, but rather about shifting focus from consumerism to things in life that give me lasting joy such as nature and fly fishing.
The current economic system overproduces material consumption and energy use, especially in transport and mobility.
The consumption has to increase to drive the GDP and profit metrics, and the wastes go into the Earth system.
If an individual can take distance to that model, it’s better for them.
