Ok, part of it’s being aware of the gaps in my own knowledge but part of it’s also knowing that my brain’s likely to fill those gaps with stuff I’ve digested from popular culture. Which isn’t always a good thing.
Even tho I know I’m allowed to just make things up for stories it actually makes me really nervous
It’s like. Knowing a little bit about some things makes me aware of how much less I know about other things.

Admittedly this happened a couple of times in the Silmarillion but Fingolfin died horribly and messily when he tried it and Beren was carried by Luthien, who admittedly was probably the closest Arda had to an action hero except that she was also an elf princess.
No I joked about this last night but the orcs really must be watching action movies. Yeah the elves sent one (1) guy to hack his way into Mordor. That guy’s name? Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.
Plans for the weekend include fanfic and reading my library books for newsletter receipts
The last movie the orcs watched on mandatory fun night

The orcs think there’s some elf guy doing Rambo out there with a sword and an axe but it’s actually Sam.
Like, no songs actually about LotR will be in the playlist. No Led Zep or Blind Guardian, great as they are. Just random lo fi bands that never meant to sing about hobbits.
I should put together a playlist of random indie/alternative songs from the 90s/00s/10s that remind me of LotR for more or less explicable reasons.
This song is extremely Sam coded tbh
Play “I will follow you into the dark” by Death Cab for Cutie in honor of Samwise I guess
I’ve been reading LotR, which is my favorite book, I’ve just hit the emotionally harrowing part and it’s made me a bit emo!

I’ve read the book before. I know that Sam does in fact choose to finish the quest by himself (he thinks). For a moment he is tempted to do otherwise (go on a vengeance quest and kill himself)
When LotR came out did some people who read the hobbit as kids go like “oh that author wrote a sequel, perhaps I shall read it to my kids or by myself for nostalgia’s sake” but then it was a 1,000 page tome about the hobbit’s nephew going to hell to fight fascist Satan.
He has this one poem about these creatures called the mewlips. Freaked me the fuck out when I read it in high school.
One benefit of reading LotR as an adult is that you have a broader emotional frame of reference and things hit differently.
“Don’t try and teach me my job” is me not infrequently
I have decided that the palantir is every technology because it amuses me. The thing can probably make copies too.
Fun and escapist fantasy book.
Do you think the orcs get to watch action movies on the palantir during the downtime between patrols

Join a union! Also, I forget how good JRRT is at character voices.
“Skin the body off you and leave you all cold in the dark in the other side” thank you JRRT! Very cool!
CW: suicide mention
I forgot the part where Sam contemplates going on this whole revenge quest to kill Gollum and then kill himself
Choices of Master Samwise thread, which in significant part consist of me going “holy shit” because I forgot how hard this chapter goes
I like the idea that everyone in Middle-earth just talks about the Silmarillion the way we would about Star Wars or something
