I only have fuzzy memories of this now, but I remember my brothers and I were in hysterics about the robot guy (Scooter?) and the way that a new body would race onscreen to pick up his head after you self destructed. Laughed about it for years afterwards. :D Kids find the weirdest stuff funny.
Knowing that I have edgy but generally well meaning skeletons in my corner is extremely reassuring, not going to lie.
Skeletons know as well as anyone what it's like to be kept in the closet.
Oh, I totally forgot this one existed! Vaguely remember it getting a good review in UK Sega Power magazine when I was a kid, but fell off my radar entirely. Will have to check it out.
I'm saying... I'm a turtleneck who dreamed he was a man and loved it. But now the dream is over... and the turtleneck is awake.
Figures that even unholy chants offered in his name would be plagiarised.
An all time classic. Did you ever play the GBA sequel / reboot? Thought it had a few bad sections, but still loads of fun on the whole.
The western version of Shining Force 2 removed the (mostly useless) ability to open chests in battle, rendering one or two boxes entirely unattainable. Having spent hours trying *everything* to open this chest as a kid, finally seeing it open feels kind of nice. A 2+ decade itch finally scratched.
Alas no. It's a Shining Ball. One of the single use damage dealing items.
The Fairy Woods do have a hidden chest with a nice ring that auto heals HP every turn, though. That's the best of the rewards for what is ultimately a very underused mechanic. But hey, journey not destination, and all that.
Can't believe modern versions of the Bible omit that one really sick crossover chapter where Lucifer fights Darksol and Zeon from old Sega RPGs.
Also, the canon existence of Lucifer in Shining Force lore implies the existence of Shining Force Jesus. In this essay I wil-
I still haven't played that one, but yeah, heard very mixed things. Looked like it discarded a lot of what I liked about the original game, tbh. Would still like to try sometime, though. Treasure games are usually interesting at very least. ^^
Can't believe they Gimli son of Glóin review a JRPG. Dude has both a figurative and literal axe to grind.
FFS can't believe they let Gimli son of Glóin review a JRPG. Dude has both a figurative and literal axe to grind.
Also, in the same old gaming magazine issue I was reading, I found the most blursed flashcart. Who needs an Everdrive?
Given the use of words like "fairy" as gay slurs and the general boys club vibe of gaming magazines at the time, the cynic in me thinks the word is doing a lot of heavy lifting for a nastier one the writer wants to use to describe the cute characters. But hey, maybe they just really hate elves.
Haha, yeah, true enough. I forget sometimes how low brow the tone of the era could get.
Thought the big lad at the back looked like a wee homage to Minotaur from FFVIII with his hunched stance, big club held in a similar way, and asymmetrical armour with one big shoulder pad. Checked his name, and sure enough. Even earth element aligned as well! I see what you did there, Sakaguchi.
Also, party reunited at last. The whole second half of this game is just a big ol' tribute to the World of Ruin from FFVI, with the quest line to collect your partners even being called 仲間を求めて / Searching For Friends like the FFVI world map track. Pretty cute.
Was never a big fan of that second half to FFVI myself, and felt like it kind of ruined the game a bit, but really having a good time with it here so far. Makes me tempted to replay VI at some point, as it's been so many years and I'm curious how I'd feel now.
Questline to gather your scattered companions during the second half of the game in Fantasian has the same name as the world map theme for the second half of Final Fantasy VI where you do the same. Pretty cute.
Actually really enjoying the second half of this despite not being much of a fan of FFVI's World of Ruin. Don't know if the quest log and modern features make all the difference or if my tastes have just changed, but curious now to revisit VI. Has been nearly two decades since I last played.
Had wondered which of the many Japanese words for "monster" the "Monster" promoted class in Shining Force 2 was originally. Turns out it's kaiju. Fuck yeah SRPG Godzilla get.
"YOUR GOD REQUESTS... a little space right now, Iunno I've just had a long day and I'm pretty fried. Kind of want some me time, you know?"
"I used to be your biggest fan, but this news shook me to my core! I'm done being your fan."
Barleybap canceled by random NPC. :( Guess I'm deleting my Twitch channel.
It's oddly touching somehow to revisit the first bits of media to spark my interest in Japan as a kid now that I speak Japanese. Get a strange sense of everything coming full circle. Brings a wee tear to my eye, especially as I'm getting older, and might not realistically revisit some of them again.
Thanks for the memories past and present, SF2. It's been a blast. <3
Asking my partner to assess the damage after I poked myself on the tip of the sword of my Sephiroth figure while cleaning my gaming space.
Sakaguchi pitching a high level quest named "Omega" promising "incredible treasure" at me like I haven't played enough Final Fantasy games to know exactly how anything involving the word "Omega" typically goes down. Sorry pal, not buying it.
Still four levels off the recommended level 50, so haven't tried yet, but already know you're right.
Used to think they were shit as a kid, and there are few things about my childhood I'm more ashamed of.
Oh wow, I had no idea they made games based on this. Used to love the show as a kid. Will have to check out.
Isn't it neat? Wouldn't you think his collection's complete? Wouldn't you think he's the whale... the whale who has everything?
