Conservation agendas transition from the global to the local - but how do they interact with existing land uses? Our typology has a global and a regional level, allowing for broad-scale planning and comparison as well as for contextually appropriate interventions on the ground.
How to be more nuanced about land use in conservation? We identify land systems, focused on actors, that represent key threats and conservation opportunities - across the tropical dry woodlands.

Land use is a key driver of the ongoing biodiversity crisis and therefore also a major opportunity for its mitigation. However, appropriately consider…

Welcoming our latest addition, Dr. Eduardo Lacerda, to the Biogeo lab!
Eduardo is deeply interested in spatial prioritization and land use change & joins us as a Postdoc.
Over the following years, he will assess the cost-benefits associated with prioritizing areas for conservation in the #Chaco.
Here's officially welcoming Dr Jonas Geldmann to our lab!✨
Jonas is a researcher at the Center for Macroecology, Evolution, & Climate, Univ. of Copenhagen.
Over the next few months, he will continue delving deeper into mapping the threats to biodiversity & studying the impacts of protected areas.
More specifically, responses to #roads were consistent with avoidance of natural #predation risk.
Near roads, animals increased #movement rates & selected for vegetation cover.
#Roadcrossings were more frequent at twilight & at night within open areas offering food resources.
In a recent collaborative paper led by Matteo Bastianelli, we found remarkably similar behavioral responses to roads of #roedeer, #reddeer, #wildboar, and #lynx in a #protectedarea in central Europe.

Roads can have diverse impacts on wildlife species, and while some species may adapt effectively, others may not. Studying multiple species' responses to the same infrastructure in a given area can h....

A very warm welcome to Xiang Liu who joins us as a PostDoc! 🌟
With us, he will evaluate rewilding prospects in #aquatic and #semiaquatic environments, focusing on changes in #landuse, plant biodiversity, and alterations at the land-water nexus.

In this study, we show 1) that intensifying agriculture does not spare forests, but Indigenous land stewardship does. 2) Market-oriented #commodityagriculture accelerated #deforestation - which is not surprising after decades of agrarian capitalism.
The #KritischerAgrarBericht2024 (Critical Agrarian Report) is now out which includes an article published in
Nature Sustainability led by Marie Pratzer, along with
@tkuemmerle.bsky.social and others.

Intensifying agriculture can, in theory, spare nature from agricultural expansion. This study finds that intensification is not sparing tropical dry forests generally, but is in areas with widespread ...

International #conservation #funding in #SouthAmerica tends to go to areas with high conservation value, not where threats (deforestation in our case) are high.
New paper led by Siyu Qin @biogeoberlin.bsky.social now out in Biological Conservation
doi.org/10.1016/j.bi...
What determines international #conservationfunding allocation?
Is it influenced by things we were expecting to matter such as:
1) conservation targets
2) threat levels
3) costs
4) supporting IPLC
5) pre-existing investment
Our latest paper led by SiyuQ with Marie Pratzer, Patrick Meyfroidt & @tkuemmerle.bsky.social
is now out in Biological Conservation.

Hi there!
Welcome to the Conservation Biogeography Lab from the Geography Department of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
We are a team of land-use scientists, remote sensers, & conservationists and study linkages between land-system change, biodiversity loss and conservation interventions.
