STL native, UM-St. Louis x Michigan State alum. Assoc Prof at Newhouse School (Syracuse U, USA) studying gaming + emerging media, Editor of Journal of Media Psychology + Editor of Registered Reports, Technology, Mind, and Behavior.
A few teaser slides from our team's #ICA24 presentation on how audiences are responding to outdated cultural depiction labels attached to older media content. The answer? It's a mix of support and rage. The first of several data collections, SU Newhouse and CodeShift.
"We're drinking our Norbeckers, can't you see?"
I'm not sure what's more saddening about AI: that the programs are so baffling toddlerish in their answers (which could be expected at this stage) or that we're so *remarkably* damned quick to share their toddlerish offerings, without a check? For me, it's the latter.
One thing about doing a great deal of work in four different language communities (for me, American English, German, Traditional Mandarin, and Spanish)? You get super good at code-switching to hide your identity (which can be good for peer review, etc.).
Same. I hate it because of all what you said. I think it sadly cheapens their grievances to those looking for an "out" in all of this. =/
Tell me again about how we don't systematically disenfranchise entire groups of people but rather, "America is too Great" for this?
Take a wild guess why South Dakota tribes loathe governor Kristi Noem and won’t permit her on their territory.
Am I the only person who thinks that it's strange to put "keynote speaker" in your bio as one of your "careers"? It's ... not how that works. When you're invited to be a keynote, it's restricted to that event. It's not a "title" to carry with you forever ... is it?
Very excited to head back to East Lansing this coming weekend to talk about the future of communication science. Kudos to Monique Mitchell Turner + Bill Donohue + Allison Eden + Jacob Fisher for organizing this event, and for MSU CAS for hosting us. Details? commscifutures.com/schedule/
Schedule and agenda for the 2024 Communication Science Futures conference
commscifutures.comToday, we're assigning the Captain's C to one of my senior PhD students who will be leading our #NHixLab for the 2024-2025 school year. Stay tuned to find out who it is. =)
A few shots from this morning's guest lecture on the psychology of media entertainment, at National Chengchi University.
Unsure. Check with the hosts? FOCL Syracuse! www.foclsyracuse.org?utm_campaign...
Oh that I don't know ... You might reach out to Friends of the Central Library (Syracuse)? www.foclsyracuse.org?utm_campaign...
Yep! I've got a paper on this, circa 2015: psycnet.apa.org/record/2015-...
Stay in touch!!
Oh that's very cool! Ought to think about ways we can do some follow-up over at Syracuse University.
Folks, this was so true. The evening was stupefying-ly (is that a word?) revealing for everyone around - and that even seemed to include Neil and Art on several occasions.
It really got me thinking about the history of comics and other moral panics & media. Will work this into class next year. =)
For me, the fun was how little of what the other one said in the conversation was known to us, and we've been talking for decades.
That came through so *remarkably* well, and it's one reason that we in the audiences were totally delighted. It was clear when one of you'd say something, and the other one was totally gob-smacked. Thanks for the evening, very much. =)
(... and I'll spare you my PhD riffings on comics and pop!)
It was damned fun! @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com and Spiegelman have a very genuine friendship, and we got the impression that much of the talk last night was quite new to each of them. We heard about the importance of comics, and of being uncomfortable. As a media studies professor, I loved it!
Art will be here soon, but @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com is here now! Largest crowd for this event in 29 years. 🧡
Hey Neat! Soon, hearing @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com live in Syracuse. 🧡
It's that time of year where I make good on my promise to review manuscripts. I mean, what are 14 hour flights good for, if not Reviewer 2 Rage?
I'm guilty of this also, but checks on factor structure (when scales are used). Let's go beyond alpha/omega.
I'm not teaching it anything! Rather, it's useful to see how it responds - partly, helps me see if the question has ambiguities. Partly, good to see common "bad answers." Partly, helps me see who's cheating. ;p
Whenever I'm asked why I "feed the beast" of AI or any other new technology, I typically refer folks to (for me) quite persuasive argument by Philippe Verdoux on transhumanism: jetpress.org/v20/verdoux....
Preparing final exams - we do oral exams for my PhD statistics courses at Newhouse. I like to test my questions out on ChatGPT. It took me nearly 10 minutes to convince the AI that the distinctions between ANOVA and regression are ... nominal. Initial answers were blabbering away ...
Remember that the Governor is describing college students here. As "worse than the Brownshirts" folks ...
Today's the 54th anniversary of the Kent State Massacre.
Ohio Governor James Rhodes, the day before the massacre:
"They're worse than the Brownshirts, and the Communist element, and also the Night Riders, and the vigilantes. They're the worst type of people that we harbor in America."
I had a similar reaction, tbh. I'm not so clear-cut on how I feel about the protests, but I was a bit surprised to see somewhat universal shade tossed at the kids for being out of line. Especially the use of "violent" to describe ... occupying Hamilton Hall? C'mon man ...
Yep. I mean it's not surprising that we only support the protests we agree with, but *wow* the whiplash is something else ...
Pretty revealing to see so many supportive of Ammon Bundy and January 6th as "protected free speech" and "obligations to engage in civil disobedience" suddenly so concerned about protests and occupations yesterday.
Delve delve delve DELVE. In conclusion, delve. =)
Doing some more research on sense of place & Fallout, I came across Jaime Banks and I's exhibit back at WVU Libraries "Appalachian Futures." We curated an exhibition of player-shared photos from #Fallout76 to show the connection between those players & WVa. researchrepository.wvu.edu/appalfutures...
... and yet they totally sanction Jan 6th and *how dare* Capitol Police protect the friggin' Congress. I can't imagine how many other countries would have allowed that insurrection to persist without a strong military response.
And of course, we're trampling their rights by ... days in court?
Looking for currently enrolled students over the age of 18 to complete a survey about their perceptions of AI. Can be students anywhere! As a benefit? They'll be entered into a drawing for one of several $50 Amazon cards. URL is: ndstate.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_...
You are being asked to participate in a study about perceptions of various modes of communication.

Re: Japanese, let's also throw in the internment camps, bruh.
With the popularity of the #Fallout television show, a signal bump to one of our team's favorite studies! In 2020, we followed ~600 gamers playing #Fallout76 for two months, to see how their gaming fostered a "sense of place" in West Virginia. Peek? tmb.apaopen.org/pub/agy1p3cr...
Peameal bacon! Had my first cuts on Stratford ON. =)
NOTE: Our plan is *not* to publish or otherwise share these analyses, although of course we'd share them with original research teams/authors.

If you're interested, please reach out at nbowman@syr.edu before the end of the week (Friday 12 April). I'll then be in touch with you in about 10 days' time with the results!

I'm looking for papers that using any of the following types of analyses:
* Non-parametric tests such as McNemar's, Binomial, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman
* MANOVA (preferably w/ discriminant analysis)
* Planned contrast coding
* Data transformations
* Multilevel modeling

Hello, folks! I'm looking for anyone interested in volunteering a manuscript/dataset PhD students' advanced statistical analysis course. Their task next week is to practice reproducibility - taking published research and, using shared data, be able to exactly reproduce the results of that work. 1/n
Thx! I got your note, and I'll be in touch. =)
