Your anger is much appreciated, since the whole conversation was way weirder and worse. 😅
No, not at all. I was DYING to say that, since it was a white Republican lawyer.
!! Missed opportunity on my part to tout my Californian accent AND namedrop Elle Woods.
(And thank you, I tried really hard to not make a BRO SRSLY? face)
Thank you for understanding this! I immediately cringed when he asked the question, since I knew exactly what was coming.
HAH! It was to a white Republican lawyer, so it would have been such a good response... 😆
Since I can 100% always say, "YEsssSsss I was born in Michigan/2 graduate degrees!!!/agented author" blah blah, but I feel like I shouldn't HAVE to.
I just really need a funny response that shuts down the conversation once and for all, and also doesn't get me in trouble w/ my boss. 🫠
Okay, Bluesky. I need your help.
I'm exasperated, since it's not even 9:00 AM, and I've already had to deal with a "What's your heritage? You don't even have an accent!" comment in a professional setting.
What's a funny response I can give, that isn't me throwing my resume at them?
It's about what kind of country we want to live in, and we have to frame it that way.
Any other type of framing, any other attempt to both-side this is disingenuous, wrong, and gross.
Just to be clear:
We're going to see a lot of news anchors (oh hey, Jake Tapper) try and describe this as impacting the "the opposing party".
No, today's about a criminal and the head of a wannabe crime syndicate rightfully being declared guilty. It's about ensuring people are not above the law.

Yes, it's easy to crack jokes online - I've seen many.
Yes, it's easy to feel like there's nothing to be done - because it's SCOTUS.
But equally: yes - we can demand Senate hearings, and we can make sure everyone knows about this.
Don't let this get swept under the rug.
All, please be yell and loud about this, and ask Senate Judiciary for hearings.
Make it clear that this is NOT okay and NOT normal, and we're not going to shut up about it.

I feel like it says something about the state of our democracy, when the Crockett/AOC/MTG fight from yesterday isn't even considered a big deal.

In things that are both disturbing and yet, not surprising news: (Gifted article)
Alito's response is infuriating, as expected.
An upside-down flag, adopted by Trump supporters contesting the Biden victory, flew over the justice’s front lawn as the Supreme Court was considering an election case.
www.nytimes.comOh, 100%. I absolutely think that also informed the response.
It's all about power and how they relish it.
They have the power to rage against harmless college students in the first scenario, whereas in the second one, they might actually have to place themselves in harm's way and risk their own mortality.
while Irvine, CA (or New York, NY, etc) is not Uvalde, TX, it is an interesting contrast how vigorously LE authorities respond to "anti-genocide protesters merely occupying a school building" vs "active shooter rampaging with AR-15"
Also: from the beginning, UCI's claim that 100 - 200 students had barricaded themselves in the Physical Sciences Hall made no sense.
A local news station was w/ PD when they undid the doors, and the lecture hall was empty and dark.
Fellow UC + UCI grads? We also need to demand an investigation.
If you haven't already, please do this.
I'll put together a carousel too re: instructions. bsky.app/profile/cele...
Just to be clear:
1. If you attended a UC school, please contact the board of regents. They're meeting NOW, so it's the perfect time.

2. If you're a UCI grad? Raise hell w/ the alumni office + email Gillman.
3. If you live in Irvine? Call City Hall.
So, update from Irvine this morning:
It sounds like the school's original assertion that there were "hundreds" of people barricaded in a building, was extremely exaggerated.
So, 10+ police agencies were called out for "several protestors".

I did! Thank you for checking on me. Trying to figure out how to put this into action steps, since I'm furious.
I was standing pretty close, and it was shocking how abrupt and out of the blue it was. Actual 360 body flip in the air, and then hit the ground.
I needed to leave or risk arrest, but reporters, if you see this, please follow up on this protestor.
I really hope they’re okay.
Police just body slammed a protestor to the ground, and issued a dispersal order.
They threw the protestor so hard, the protestor’s body flipped in the air. As far as I can tell, the protester did nothing to warrant that type of response
Hearing on the ground (this has not been verified): officers from eight separate cities have been deployed here, as a part of the local “mutual aid” agreement.
There are at least four agencies at UCI (UC Irvine) right now, and it's just all ridiculous and unnecessary.
Locals will especially get this, but Don Wagner of the OC BOS, an unrepentant MAGA Republican, is talking to NBC News at the moment.
It’s very on brand for Don.
