I like talking about things that start with “p” like politics (pragmatic progressive), psychedelics, psychoanalysis, philosophy, Portland, the Pacific Northwest & “m”—music, mushrooms. Parent of 2 teens. Daimista (IYKYK).
Man, my hunch has been that Thug is guilty as hell, but as a fan it’s great watching the prosecution fuck the case up this badly. Any chance of any charges getting dropped because of this misbehavior?
My mom has always told me about the time when I was around 5 and lost a pair of shoes the morning we were set to start a 2-day drive to my grandparents. I’d always accepted her opinion that it was completely weird to lose them but maybe it wasn’t so bad or unusual?
The trial itself only started in November I think, but jury selection & various pre-trial motion stuff took over a year. Young Thug has been in jail awaiting trial since May ‘22.
Also anyone who’s ever gotten over excited and said something embarrassing about it at work can empathize with how he got fired
I wasn’t aware that cricket was both subtle *and* sophisticated? I feel myself warming to it slightly.
But not so much that I’m going to think about it for another decade or so after this news cycle ends
Wow! Is it like mentioned in their profile or more something that comes out as you’re texting?
But this would also explain at least some of the high rates of ghosting that goes on
I can totally understand how it would be a fun diversion & opportunity for day dreaming, at least assuming I had unlimited internet access.
How often do you come across convicts locked up using contraband phones?
The loneliness/isolation of the job would be bad, but mostly imo because of how it would intersect with being responsible for the lives or deaths of some number of people, an experience most people don’t & can’t share with you
I’d forgotten about this movie, but regardless, “therapist to the president” is a great premise for a high quality streaming series—provided we get to continue thinking of the president as a relatively normal person in a tough job rather than as a personality-disordered tyrant
If you’re sad about the Trump case in Georgia being indefinitely delayed, the Young Thug YSL trial can offer more than your fill of Fani Willis’ office running clown-show RICO case.
Over at the Young Thug trial, Brian Steel discovered that Judge Glanville and ADA Adrian Love met in his chambers with a witness ex parte to get him to change his mind from pleading the 5th.
Judge Glanville has threatened to jail the attorney if he does not reveal how he found out.
Young Thug’s attorney Brian Steel argued with Judge Ural Glanville about addressing him inappropriately on several occasions in front of the jury. The argume...

If I was the judge I’d have put defense counsel in jail for asking me to believe that “Thug” stands for “Truly Humble Under God” & for claiming that a close reading of Thug’s lyrics will show he’s a deeply spiritual, Christian rapper.
These are serious crimes against common sense!
(Huh? Huh? Any Young Thig fans reading this? Working in some references here, surely someone will appreciate it)
Nah, it goes back to the’60s, and I remember teachers in the 80s talking about flag burning & desecration as one of the awful things the hippie America-haters liked to do
Can you play as someone in a Sunni death squad driving around at night kidnapping people? Or some young guy in the mahdi army?
Never played these games so I forgive me if that’s absurd
I mean I don’t disagree that it may actually help to name the more radical/disruptive ultimate goal.
But I’m one of the people who doesn’t do any work to support the causes I claim to support, so I’m just guessing as to why that may not be useful
I’d think that risks
1. Creating more opposition to the incremental ask, as this would let opponents say “see? They really are radicals trying to get you on their slippery slope”
2. Empowering the people who hate doing anything incremental “the goal is no cars so why support this weak tea?”
He’s mentally a child who can’t function unless he picks a big daddy figure to farm out all his thoughts and opinions to.
Around the time that McCain was nearing death Graham imprinted on to Trump and the rest is history
Hey, Idaho has some gorgeous country. It’s also filled with Nazis but the natural landscape isn’t to blame for that
There’s only one good Catholic convert that I’m aware of, Matt Sitman of the Know Your Enemy pod and various writing.
He seems to have joined in large part because of the social justice aspects of it, one of the only times in history that’s happened?
I’ve found the arguments made by @proptermalone.bsky.social pretty compelling.
Beyond that I wonder who the silent approving people you’re referring to are? Because I’m sure I can find plenty of examples of liberals criticizing this act. Individuals, NGOs, advocacy groups, probably some electeds
I have barely set foot in the town but have been to just outside there a couple times to this little retreat center. And I drove home the long way along the coast and it was so beautiful
Yeah, though there’s Port Angeles and Port Townsend along the North Shore
Asking because it’s one of my favorite places in the world. Have gone backpacking there a couple times
I always worry about it when I’m at the coast, which is fairly common, a few times a year probably, I always keep an eye out for the high ground
Wow. Astoria is a really cool place, and the loss of life that could happen.
Yeah no I totally see it.
I forget how far up the Columbia the tsunami would travel at what height, but I don’t believe it would cause much damage in Portland, 60 miles inland.
Our bridges are likely to go though
No, there’s nobody with a prominent perch in the media as a public intellectual or pundit who advocates the revolutionary overthrow of the existing system.
Don’t know how you’re defining left, but I do think there are genuine left of center liberals who do more than argue against leftwing ideas—Paul Krugman, Jamelle Bouie, Chris Hayes & Rachel Maddow. I’m sure there’s more I’m forgetting. These folks I’d accept being called a fellow liberal with
I’ve read various accounts of how it could go and there are certainly plenty where Portland is deeply fucked.
Don’t know why they chose us over Seattle but both the New Yorker and Outside magazine had scary articles based around the quake epicenter being off the Oregon & how Portland would be hit
Of the US pop, 33% or so are 100% committed fascists, another 12% are soft-fascist or “vote red even if you’re dead” types (🤔not as catchy as the Blue version) so yeah—probably about 10% existing in some Schrödinger’s cat box of unknowability, even to themselves.
I dig Obama’s kids, I bet they end up doing something interesting & worthwhile with themselves.
Am I remembering right that one of Eisenhower’s kids married one of Nixon’s?
My assumption is that Trump will say ever scarier things as the campaign rolls on…My greatest fear is that we find out actually that is what a majority of Americans want. I don’t think so but man if he wins outright?
I’m hoping for a combo of a growing # of swing voters seeing Trump say increasingly NAZI-esque stuff at the same time as his cognitive slippage grows ever worse, then come fall some Dem superPACS or maybe the Biden campaign itself running really intense scary ads that explicitly make the NAZI comps

I need to see where my senator, Ron Wyden, is re: KOSA. This is one of his areas of expertise and he was leading what little institutional opposition to the bill the last time I checked. If he’s gotten on board then so am I
