View line is where the aurora is low on the horizon. If you are in the colored regions the aurora can be overhead and even to the south.
That said, it entirely depends on various things, but the one thing I keep a watch on is Bz. If it goes below -20 i tend to see auroras here.
Also there's now a geomagnetic storm watch for level 4.

It was more like 200 counts per minute when I got up to spend less time nearby and therefore not shielding it with my body. He checked with a full minute close to the Geiger counter and registered 21000cpm, which I think is around 14-15mR/hr.
With my body no longer partially shielding the counter, it is running about 20x background with him about six feet away with a wood/glass divider between.
