Indeed. Ancient Roman food also had fascinatingly intense flavor profiles (and tons of garum)
Oh yeah I wouldn’t do that, I require some actual flavor beside Pain lol

Going for an English : m.youtube.com/watch?v=H-uE...
In this iconic sketch, a group of Indian friends "go for an English" in Bombay, because it wouldn't be a Friday night without an English would it?Subscribe: ...
m.youtube.comAlways good to reshare this vis a vis European food and spices (and European food of course DOES use spices, just not as much hot chile in most places as you get in parts of Asia or Central/South America…)
Classic classism probably contributed:

Complex, contrasting flavors are a hallmark of Indian cooking. They used to dominate Western food, too. What changed? When spices became less exclusive, Europe's elite revamped their cuisines.
www.npr.orgI forgot the scare quotes because I was getting off a plane but that was intended to be read with extreme sarcasm
I do love a weird fish
overcursed this from a spam account on instagram.
Stargazer fish are similar to stonefish & scorpionfish, so they also possess venomous spines that deliver painful stings. some varieties can even deliver electric shocks.
species of Stargazers are found in shallow and deep saltwaters worldwide. 🌊🤗

spicy curry and masculinity: surely someone has studied this
My dad used to know the chef at his local Indian restaurant. When they went there with the Rugby Lads he'd order the ridiculous inedible hot thing that you used to get on menus here, but the chef knew who it was and toned it down.
Rugby masculinity is apparently important.
Malaysians also eat a TON of greens but yeah, not so much with salads now that you mention it….but mmmm sambal belacan water spinach
yup - I’m very interested in culinary history so I’m personally well aware.
I’ve asked but the straight up Greek places didn’t seem to have it most of the time - no big either way (some did have grilled hot peppers which were delicious)
Another thing I really appreciate about Greek food is that they eat a TON of really fresh vegetables, greens, and salads - which can be hard to find in some other places and cuisines. I did not find myself craving nutrients there.
