Well, also they may just genuinely not know what to do with those cuts.
I mean, a lot of people are pretty pissed about having to pay much more to rent the same level of apartment or buy the same level of house, it seems.

yeah, i think my generation absolutely is a lot more leery of dirt-cheap meat.
yes, I very often do that too when I see those posts, and quite a few of these people just genuinely seem to be low income and stressed about it.
oh they're absolutely a self-selecting sample, i'm under no delusions that this is in any way a representative or scientific sample
these folks in Somerville are great

yeah, like i am very grateful my southern dad showed me exactly what do with various kinds of cheap meat cuts, but not everyone has that specific asset
i really don't think that's the case at all wrt the general casual comments i'm seeing in cooking-related forums
Sure, there's plenty data showing that most people probably can afford ground beef - I'm not contesting that at all. What I'm actually interested in is why it seems like more people in my totally unscientific sample are *saying* they can't.
I've noticed it coming up not infrequently when people claim they can't afford to make XYZ thing they used to eat a lot as a kid due to higher grocery prices. Which is also sticky in the memory.
apparently fake meat sales are also doing pretty poorly too (possibly largely due to pricing)

Though the space has made strides to reach more people, only 15% of U.S. households purchased its alternative protein products in 2023, compared to 19% in 2022.

Per this source (which i'd need to dig into further, but it seems....OK?), meat sales are declining:
vegconomist.com/market-and-t...
The United States has witnessed a steady decline in meat consumption for the second consecutive year. Retail sales data from IRI Worldwide reveals that 2023
vegconomist.comAnd of course a lot of people don't really know what to do with many cuts of meat that aren't very basic
i think people still had to buy groceries during the pandemic though
that's true, but i was particularly struck by seeing a number of people claiming they can't really afford stuff like ground beef anymore
i've noticed this coming up in forums that are just generally about cooking, and people making aside comments along the lines of "dang i can't afford to buy this meat right now"
oh yeah, i agree that it's a wildly unscientific and unrepresentative sample, but it does interest me as an observation (especially as i'm pretty insulated from having to think about food prices much at all)
Sure, but it's interesting that it seems to be coming up a lot more than it did not long ago, and in conversations that aren't entirely oriented around "let's all one-up each other about how expensive food is."
And again, I'm less discussing the actual data and more why people feel that way.
Yeah, I'm less interested in if they're correct or not about meat prices - as you note, there's data showing they very well might not be - but it does interest me that at least from my POV, I'm seeing a lot more "I can't afford meat" posts online in casual conversation.
oh god yes, i feel that way too, and i think so many of us do - "i'm doing well now, but THIS COULD ALL BE OVER FOREVER IN AN INSTANT""
Sure, but the question at hand is really "why do so many people feel this way," which is separate from "are they right to feel this way or not""
we do have access to some VERY good butchers who buy whole animals from local farms and will do custom cuts for us. but yeah, restaurants have access to some nice stuff.
@scoiattolo.mountainherder.xyz we should probably look into finding a way to get these made again
And again, it's possible that they are lying/misremembering, but why is it making such a big impression?
Maybe, but that brings us back to "Why do they feel the need to lie about this?"
And these people seem to be relatively normie by Reddit user standards. Absolutely not frothing GOP types.
it's not the USERS who are fleeing the porn, they're fleeing because they're concerned the indonesian government will block X/Twitter
Ehh, I have reason to believe many of these people on Reddit were not shopping at Whole Foods to begin with. They're saying they can't afford meat *at all*, including ground beef, not "i can't afford fancy meat."
ironically steak is one of the things i NEVER order when i eat out because it's way easier to cook at home for us
Uh, go look up if you are able to legally bar aircraft (including drones and manned aircraft) from flying over your property in the US, then get back to me
Well, we have a remote ID system that creates a kind of digital license plate - and there are certainly a number of valid reasons for drone fly-overs (disaster response, scientific research, etc).
Yeah, I know, that's why it's interesting that the NYPD are pushing on this again.
uh, i don't know what the people you're around who say "war crimes are always bad" are like, but that sure as hell doesn't describe the people i know who hold that belief
Also, remote ID is supposed to help with identifying people flying in illegal and dangerous ways.
