The NYPD are terrorizing this city with their illegal assaults and surveillance
A large pro-Palestinian protest in Brooklyn erupted into a chaotic scene on Saturday, as officers were filmed punching several people and the police arrested dozens of demonstrators.

www.nytimes.comI fly internationally in just under a month so I guess I’ll find out more about government surveillance of anti-genocide activists soon. It’ll be an effed up test of my white privilege.
I want to emphasize that you are not required to give your phone to any law enforcement person. Also WTF
Historian Ilan Pappe was detained in Detroit airport on Monday and asked if he was a Hamas supporter, whether he views Israeli action in Gaza as genocide, who his Arab and Muslim friends are in America, and what his solution is to the “conflict.”
He is 70.
“After reviewing the facts established by independent human rights monitors, journalists, and United Nations agencies, we conclude that Israel’s actions in and regarding Gaza since October 7, 2023, violate the Genocide Convention.” www.humanrightsnetwork.org/genocide-in-...
This is an obvious way for authors to report editorial malpractice
Also Greil published some hateful, vile crap and helped a lot of people so we’ve got another one of those Big Contradictions. Let’s do the work privately of sorting that out; let’s not hash it out here. My 🪙x2
The notion that “celebrating your achievements” is achieved by suffocating and muting particular political or social identities is so inane that it took me a minute to realize it became policy.
I know arguing with the Times is madness but it is THE GENOCIDE THAT DISRUPTED our willingness to be obedient little chess pieces in your ceremonies.
Several schools will hold graduation ceremonies on Sunday, a day after pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted events at the University of California, Berkeley, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Here are the latest updates.

www.nytimes.comSo many more people are anti-genocide than they are Pro-Palestinian. (Style guide notes)
Completely worth your time, a podcast series on academic freedom and free speech with great experts: knightcolumbia.org/content/view...
She announced it in the context of creating a diverse community that respects all identities and my brain fucking exploded.
Her email to the community yesterday was similarly disingenuous. She asserted she was the right leader to guide us toward an inclusive, tolerant, rule abiding learning community.
If this passes, I will be on a no fly list because I volunteered as a deescalator at the Columbia encampment.
OK they've snuck it in as an amendment to the Senate funding bill for the FAA, along with a couple of other anti-protest measures like putting Palestine protesters on no-fly lists.
Our Vice President of Diversity today mentioned in a faculty meeting that “from the river to the sea” is hate speech.
I am “oh good there’s new episodes of Clarkson’s Farm available!” years old.
Whooooooooooo! 🚨🚨🚨

The subpoenability (?) of our records actually came up in todays Senate meeting! 😂😳 I’m surprised at how many colleagues don’t yet realize that we’re going to be test cases for the whole slate. Title IX stuff, due process stuff, free speech stuff, federal $ for higher ed, etc.
Sorry for the source but:

I'm a professor at @Tulane. I was present at the Pro-Palestinian protest on campus. I observed Tulane students engaging in peaceful & nonviolent demonstration. Lift suspensions & drop charges We condemn the violent & disproportionate police response. We stand with our students. https://t.co/HUW5KsntQk
x.comI think you all know, but it’s worth stating: things are so much more rotten and dirty in this fight to return to legal protest and shared governance than you know. Weird to be in the middle of a thing and think, “that’ll make it to the biopic.” Or “that’ll be in several lawsuits.”
My brain cannot absorb this terrible news.

Encampment up at RISD. Progress at Trinity College Dublin (see below), and cops are conducting arrests at Sciences Po in Paris.

vimeo.comHas anyone mentioned that it is Teacher Appreciation Week at Columbia?
This at UPenn and coming soon to Columbia, it seems.
Oh cool interim president of my uni who is only the interim president b/c the actual president was forced to resign sent an email saying faculty and staff who support student protestors will have their “roles and responsibilities reviewed.” Definitely no violations of academic freedom to see here.
UNC joins the increasing group of faculty refusing to allow business as usual to happen while cops are on campus and our money is buying weapons to kill women and children.
Amazing to see this: at UNC, faculty, instructors, and TAs are withholding grades to demand amnesty for arrested and suspended students.
Sorry that’s not meant as an indictment of high school or elementary or uncredentialed history teachers. Just, grace, please. 🙏🏻
We do radicalize our students in the sense that we teach them how to do historical research. They came knowing how to find living experts—they found us!
It is WILD to watch them run the same playbook OVER AND OVER.
"King and his cronies hold SECRET MEETINGS to TRAIN the protestors!!!"
Like lol yes, of course they do? To minimize your justifications to brutalize them and post-dissent attempts to punish them??? They KNOW how you'll respond!
The more terrifying our neighborhood becomes, the more people step up to offer a better vision of who we are and how we make ourselves safe.
NYPD is occupying campus and our neighborhood. Reports of sexual harassment on campus and targeted inspection of community members of color are rolling in. There are several entirely closed blocks and checkpoints at regular junctures. GUESS WHAT THIS REMINDS ME OF?
Give them all awards
Columbia University’s radio station and other student-led news outlets have provided some of the most detailed — and widely lauded — coverage of the turmoil engulfing protests on college campuses.

www.nytimes.comOur students still don’t have access to any dining halls, and a group of non-tenure track and untenured faculty have worked with local faith leaders and now they have twelve free community meals organized for this week. Our University isn’t our leadership. Our leaders are teachers staff & students.
To wit: my first or second year at Vanderbilt frat boys thought it was funny to put a real pig head on a stick and mount it in front of the Hillel Center.
If you think Southern frat boys are concerned about antisemitism you should be under conservatorship

There was a really bizarre exchange about the historical need to have a shrine around the bullet in today’s senate meeting.
Thanks to every ally on here who spoke up against some kind of icky response to one of my posts. I never saw the offending comment so YAY TEAM. Really—thanks to everyone helping.

www.thecity.nycAAUP is working on that. Unclear what effect a summer labor strike of faculty would have tho. Staff in unions are in some cases barred from doing so.
