Some more wispy textures and pastel colours from last night.
#PaintedSkies #Photography #Cloudscapes #Abstract
A variety of clouds from the weekend as the rain was coming in.
The last one is a personal favourite - I can see a mountain lake with reflections - but I do like the more abstract ones too.

We had a visit from a broad-bodied chaser yesterday.
Good fun playing with my extension tubes, although I need to practice more to understand the relationship between subject distance, focal length, focus distance and depth of field.
A lovely evolution of cotton-candy (or I suppose I should say candy floss) pinks and blue hour tones last night. Admittedly, the last two are the same patch of cloud, but I loved the glow nestled in amongst the darker patches.

Some textures from yesterday as the storm rolled in.

But then, the sunset decided it had something to prove and started throwing shafts and rays everywhere, with a little rain in the air for good measure.

Last night we had some incredible skies.
First off, four from a Mammatus display:

Some very lovely soft colours and glow tonight.

After a wet day, sunset colours can often be a bit more intense when the light catches the moisture in the air.
A bit like today for example. Lovely colours and glow for a few minutes.

Last night, just as the day faded, we got a gap in the grey, revealing some lovely layers and textures.

Mrs M and I took a trip to the beach last night after rumours of aurora started popping up on facebook groups.
It was well worth the trip :)

Maybe I'm missing the hills a bit, but this reminded me a bit of Parkhouse Hill.
Maybe it's more like a wave? Or just a pointy cloud?
Either way, it felt like a lovely scene tonight with the soft textural wisps around the main peak.

Man... shame on me for not knowing you had a YT channel! Thanks!
Another burning sunrise this morning. Having woken early, I saw the glow around the curtains, and got up to investigate.
The first of the month certainly packed a pinch / punch.

I'd love to watch your processing workflow... the results are always sumptuous, and I just don't see B&W well.
But I guess, really, a lot starts with the scene in camera as you say, so just seeing the post-part would probably miss the most important bit!
Do you find this is more important when shooting Mono? I'm guessing WB is probably less of a concern for you, whereas I guess H&S will have a big impact on your back of camera view of a scene?
All in post, for H&S certainly. I did tweak the auto WB default on my Sony but found I was overriding that anyway later so went back to defaults.
I tend to watch the WB when shooting and switch the to mode which best matches the scene by eye, so that's kind of a reset rather than a creative choice.
Yeah, I'd agree with that. I process everything manually. I do tend to copy settings between similar images from the same set, but only once I've got a rough processing down.
I must admit I've not thought back to the film approaches to justify it. It's more my need for creative control!
Sandstorm.
Maybe I'm just excited to see Dune 2, who knows.

Very kind of you indeed mate. It feels somewhat self-indulgent at times, so nice to know there's at least one person out there enjoying it! :)
I know, I know... I said no more gallery posts for my #PaintedSkies, but these are the evolution of this morning's sunrise so do belong together.
An early alarm for an appt meant we got to see it in all it's glory. It was hard to shoot between chimneys & wires, but it was a corker.

Not sure of a title for this, but it reminded me of something underwater with a light shining through the surface. Either way I really liked the suggestion of light into a slightly claustrophobic darkness.

Thank you Richard - I'll let you know if they go ahead :)

Thanks for sowing some seeds that help me unpack this for myself too! There's a lot of wisdom in there.
I'll probably find a way to do it for myself, but maybe need to order a few to hopefully cover the cost at least :)

If I'm honest, there's a sense of validation in there too as it feels a bit unconventional in its subject matter.
I have no idea when it'll feel 'complete' enough for a printed volume, but I find I'm looking for ways to make it feel more formal than just a hashtag I overuse :)

- providing a creative expression / motivation when I can't do the normal stuff especially.
The zine side is partly "cos everyone does" (or 'did' as you rightly point out!) - as well as to force me to look more deeply at the work while I curate it.

Hey - thanks for all this - that's a really helpful reflection.
The mention of the lockdowns is particularly interesting - you're absolutely right there. And due to some health struggles, I'm finding myself essentially 'locked down' again, and this project is (for me) all the things you mention /1
Let's say, hypothetically, this happened.
Would anyone be interested?

#PaintedSkies - 20th Feb
Quite a grey day, but some nice textures before the rain flattened everything out. There was even a rather sinister character who appeared for a few moments...

#PaintedSkies - 19th Feb
Had some really interesting textures in the morning, and then a surprise (and brief) splash of colour as the sun set.

Thanks :) it's an ongoing project I'm working on while my health keeps me off the hills.
I've got a growing portfolio at www.instagram.com/painted.skie...
It's been a grey couple of days, but it's still worth looking up. There's beauty even when the colours have faded.

Some #PaintedSkies from a couple of days ago when there was an abundance of watercolour clouds.

It's a roller-coaster for sure. I'm doing ok today thanks mate. They're currently flipflopping about whether it was an attack or a heart infection. But still enjoying a free stay at an excellent cardiac unit! Staff have been incredible.
How's tricks with you?
But let's maybe do it without a heart attack next time. Had a bad reaction to the drugs, now on the cardiac ward.
Still. I'm posting this, so it could be worse.
Some mid-afternoon #PaintedSkies from a few days ago (found on my camera when I came to download the images of last night's mammatus extravaganza!)
I'm quite fond of the simple silver tones - it doesn't all have be sumptuous sunsets :)
