I mean, come on. There's LOTS of other reasons for everybody to hate the English!
Strongly feeling this essay from the wonderful Na'ama Carlin published in Meanjin.

Pain, suffering, hope, humanity, and revolution are universal and do not necessitate the safety of one peoples to the exclusion of others. We are not free until all of us are free.

Also importantly, @jewishcurrents.bsky.social published a letter espousing the story of Israel's founding that's usually taught to Jews (me included).
Following it is a response from the Editors explaining the many problems with that Zionist narrative.

Vajra's THE SAINT OF BRIGHT DOORS was my favourite book of last year - a form of magic realism you've never encountered before, a queer/ed look at Sri Lankan history, south Asian mythology, fascism; an examination of how humanity rewrites history and remakes the world.
And it's fucking beautiful.
If you’ve enjoyed THE SAINT OF BRIGHT DOORS, do me a favour and talk it up to your book-reading friends! The book is currently doing great with award nominations but definitely needs your help to get the word out for sales, a wholly different affair lol
The Saint of Bright Doors gets its sixth award nomination!(?)

Brilliant piece by fellow cellist Bridget Chappell on "irrigation colonialism" and how it links Zionism with Australia and California (and more)

Thanks Steve for showing the world how to grow up, with real grace. And for decades of great music and for working in service of countless other musicians.

Can confirm: what little antisemitism I've experienced has been disproportionately at the hands of self-avowed Christians.
Growing up the worst anti semitism I experienced was from Christian fundamentalists now they get to decide if I'm an anti semite
What a surprise

There are some areas where I've ended up disagreeing with him, but I still love his plain-speaking style, and owe much of my thinking on mind, ontology and more to him.
I'll be re-reading some Dennettisms this week, not least "Real Patterns".

Terribly sad to discover that Daniel C Dennett has died.
No other philosopher was more important for my outlook, not just on cognitive science, but many other areas.
Of the four horsement of New Atheism, he was by far the kindest and, as it's turned out, the least awful.
Part of the "New Atheist" movement, best known for work on consciousness, free will.
arstechnica.comAs always, your command of your satire subjects' vernacular is unparalleled
The Louise Bourgeois exhibition at the AGNSW is brilliant not just because of her genius but because it's beautifully curated and laid out.
Highly recommend if yr in Sydney. Until next weekend.
ME READING REVIEWS IN THE WIRE:
Fuck yeah!!! Definitely gonna listen to this later!
ME LISTENING TO THE MUSIC REVIEWED IN THE WIRE:
Well this fucking sucks. What the fuck.
OK but Gielgud died in 2000, so it's likely there's not one cat alive today old enough to remember him.
Stop trying to make GOOD GRIEF happen, Charlie Brown. It's not going to happen.
Yeah count on Daniel Lewkowitz for jumping on the opportunity to be the biggest piece of shit
I'd be more impressed if he'd done the orchestration himself. But I understand, it can be hard to remember the range of a bassoon, and tbh writing in viola clef is *hard*. Mad props to the Communist League's "Red Army Faction"!
Fuck. I'd never heard this 7" single version of Brian Eno's "King's Lead Hat" before.
The title's an anagram of Talking Heads, and you can really hear Eno aping David Byrne's vocal styles here. But it's vintage Eno, a link between new wave & an earlier era.
Genius.

I love Bey, she's a great songwriter and singer, and her last few albums have been chef's kiss.
But, "Blackbiird"... All the vocal & string ornamentations just detract from the simplicity of the song, AND then it's straitjacketed with a metronome - why?

Very interesting perspective on Cowboy Carter from Yasmin Williams, who knows a thing or two about Black country music.

For all her declarations of being authentically country, Cowboy Carter arrives on the back of booming business for the genre and is all about the star, not the roots music supposedly at the project’s ...
