This is the sort of smartassery I can get behind. (The sign is supposed to be warning about the spiky little seeds of sandcarpet/Cardionema ramosissimum that grow in that field.)

Tomorrow I get to sleep in late, in my own bed, without an alarm, for the first time in just under a month. I am thoroughly exhausted, but it's been due to all good things.
Something something leopards eating faces party.
Okay, I am gonna have to try this happy accident myself!
That's even worse! I bet he never apologized either.
I'm so sorry that happened to you. Kids can be awful to each other, and often people don't take the impact of "just teasing" seriously.
That's not polydactyl. That's, like, polyolyolydactyl.
Wonder if it's a more cautious rabbit version of coyote escorting, where the one following you is basically being the Neighborhood Watch?
It's #TellaFriendFriday! Please enjoy this photo I took of Atlantic #camas (Camassia scilloides). Then RS this, or share my site RebeccaLexa.com with someone who may be interested in my #NaturalHistory work! #NativePlants #wildflowers #botany #nature #NaturePhotography #flowers
Thought I recognized those spots. Please give both of those adorable puppers some scritches for me!
Oooh, I need this!!!
(I'm still fussing with it here and there, but)
Here is the official cover reveal for my upcoming book, THE CICADAS OF NORTH AMERICA!

Yep, they changed the name a while back, but same great little birds!
Well, I'm visiting my folks in MO so eastern towhees, but back in the PNW where I live these days we have scads of spotted towhees. They're VERY vocal and have a varied vocabulary; if I hear a bird making a weird noise there's a good chance it's a towhee.
I haven't had that happen yet (thanks for the heads-up!), but back home in the PNW I had the "Steller's jay spot-on red-tailed hawk imitation" throw Merlin for a loop.

If I've learned anything from almost 30 years online, it's that you can't please everyone. Be sensitive about not accidentally punching down, but don't worry about kicking a few sealions in the head along the way.
Every time I come back to MO to visit family I get to catch up on birds now that I know how to ID them. Was lucky enough to watch an eastern towhee singing at the top of a snag for a few minutes, surrounded by Carolina and house wrens.
I'm still relearning that weekends are time off, not "time to squeeze in more work that isn't the sort done during the week."
Thanks for saying all these things that can never be said too many times. I've had to explain coyote escorting isn't "stalking", that fed coyotes are fearless coyotes, and the fact that offleash dogs are almost always aggressors in wildlife-dog conflicts. Uphill battle, but we gotta keep it up.
Nothing gets me to skedaddle away quicker than an electric leaf blower.
We need to stay aware of the real issues we face, but the western environmental movement IMO has always leaned too heavily on guilt and fear, not helped by the 24 hour news cycle today. The doomers need to touch grass something fierce.
Honestly, this is why I get out and volunteer for habitat restoration projects. It gets me out of my head for a while, it gets me around other people who are also trying to make a difference working on a concrete project, and at the end of the day we've helped this particular spot recover a bit.

This reminds me of why I love shore pines. Same sp as the lodgepole, Pinus contorta, which grows straight and tall. But shore pines (P.c. contorta) are also krummholz with delightfully twisted, wind-resistant shapes. The twisty ones gave the species its name <3
*raises hand*
Adult ADHD and autism diagnoses have exploded because until relatively recently they didn’t believe girls could have those, so many adult women have been diagnosed late as adults, often after their sons and daughters do
I have zero advice, but I hope it is significantly less awful than it could be.
Walt Kelly has been a lifelong favorite of mine. As a kid I loved the funny animals and slapstick, and as an adult I increasingly appreciate his social and political commentary.
Here are two important cartoons for Earth Day. The first is the famous quote from Pogo "We have met the enemy and he is us." In the second, Joel Pett has a man talking about climate change, saying "What if it's a big hoax and we create a better world for nothing."
I'm at my folks' place in MO, and did some yardwork Eastern #gartersnake (#Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) needed to be safely relocated to the woods in back of the house. Common #boxturtle (#Terrapene carolina, maybe T.p. triunguis?) was taking a sunbath on top of the brush pile. #herps
Also had a good meeting with the education director at the Flint Hills Discovery Center about doing some presentations there whenever I'm in the area. Very excited about collaboration!
OMW to Missouri for work & family, got grounded in Manhattan, KS with a cold yesterday. Hoping to be back on the road tomorrow, with a much-needed #hike at #KonzaPrairie. #prairie #grasslands #NativePlants #HabitarRestoration
That is adorable and completely creepy even with context. Tho I was thinking something like A. phalloides; A. muscaria would just make you wish you were dead for a few days!
