🪶 Wilson’s Warbler — this is another huge shot for me! Been hearing and seeing these flit about the trees for years. Not the great shots I wanted, but I’ll take them! #birding #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature
📷 Dragonfly emergence time! These are Spiny Baskettails and we got on the water at just the right time to see them transform from nymphs into adult dragonflies. #odonata #dragonflies #wildlife #photography #invertebrates #insects #nature #naturephotography
🪶Red-winged blackbird — both male and female. One of the biggest gender differences in birds in my neck of the woods. Fiercely protective of their nests in the reeds of wetlands, and beautiful calls. #birding #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature
We saw our first today in the backyard as well in SW Portland. Had to do a phone shot through our catio wire so nothing like your beautiful shot.
🪶 Spotted Towhee — even one of the most handsome birds around has a bad feather day once in a while, and this little one is telling everyone about it! #birding #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature
🪶Western Tanager — shot this outside of Santa Fe. Giving me a look like it was surprised to see me there. Such a beautiful bird! #birding #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature
🪶Song Sparrow — sometimes there is an annoying leaf you can’t get around blocking an otherwise nice shot — but you get to see a tiny birdy tongue as a consolation! #birding #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature
🪶Golden-crowned Sparrow — from the wetlands to my backyard. Aptly named, these little beauties visit us most years around this time. More shy and quiet than the song sparrow, they’re a welcome pop of color at our feeders! #birds #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography
Thanks Peter, wonderful photo! I hear these little peeps frequently around Portland forests, but I've yet to lay eyes on one! I have some land outside of Vernonia (40 acres of timberland, just for the animals), and I hear them a lot out there, but they're just so hard for me to spot in thick forest.
🪶Tree Swallows — these fun, acrobatic fliers are out nesting already. Curious and chatty, to me they really signal summer is on the way! Fernhill Wetlands was popping yesterday! #birds #birding #photography #wildlifephotography #wildlife #nature
Finally got around to processing some of my eclipse photos. I was pretty grumpy about the cloudy skies in Dallas that day, but I have to admit it made for some interesting, moody photos. Shot handheld with a Canon G7X & welders glass over the lens. 🧪 #sun #eclipse #photography #astrophotography
🪶Killdeer — found this beauty sitting on their nest. Was glad to have the 200-500mm so I could keep my distance. #birds #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotgraphy #birding
🪶Blue Heron -- I often get nice shots of the head of these birds, as they're very patient. I don't usually go for a shot completely from the back, but as this gorgeous bird flew away from our photo session, I couldn't resist. #birds #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotgraphy #birding
They were about 50 feet off and I was using my 100-500 with the 1.4x extender. I should have got down in the mud on my belly to get the water out of the pics but I didn’t have that in me yesterday :)
🪶Hooded Merganser pair — this gorgeous couple is often in a suburban pond not far from the house this time of year. She was really showing off! Failure to capture their full beauty is all mine!

@rhapsodysblues.bsky.social wow you’re so right! Juvenile male. Totally missed that and I’m so thankful you pointed it out! 🙌🏼
Good question. Most of what I found says female but work another look.
🪶Wood Duck (female) — my favorite duck I think. Haven’t yet snapped a photo of a male, but they’re a gorgeous pair when seen together. And, they nest in the hollows of trees (or box nests humans put up) which is super cool.
#birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶Purple Finch (morph) — saw this bird in our backyard and had a fit, no idea what it was! After some careful research and helpful iNat identifiers, we learned how special it was. Have not seen one in the two years since.

🪶House Finch — wondering when the tomatoes are going to show up! I originally thought Purple Finch it’s so brilliant. But I’ve noticed the feet of a Purple Finch are generally slightly purple, and that isn’t present here.

🪶Cooper’s Hawk — perched on our back fence, looking back at our bird feeder station. This bird is the definition of regal. So gorgeous. Grateful to have been in a position to snap this shot.

🪶Common Yellowthroat Warbler — really, someone looked at that face and decided on that name? Not “The Masked Warbler”? Or “Phantom of the Warblers”? Not very common looking and not commonly sighted at least where I live.
#birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶Canada Jay — members of the Corvid family these birds are inquisitive and intelligent, and were more than happy to perch not just in a nearby tree but on various items in my campground this last weekend. Really pretty birds.
#birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶 Mallard Duck — very common in the Pacific Northwest. Demonstrating that there is beauty even in the extremely common.
#birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶 Anna’s Hummingbird — everyone needs a good stretch from time to time!
#birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶 Green-winged Teal — I absolutely love the colors on display on this beautiful bird. #birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶 Northern Shoveler — it was raining so hard and I couldn’t help but wonder if rain like that is annoying to water fowl. Love the rain drops exploding all around this gorgeous bird! #birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶Northern Harrier #birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography #nature
🪶Golden-crowned kinglet — this is the second bird I captured this weekend, and they’re even more difficult than the Pacific Wren, tiny and almost never standing still! #birds #wildlife #photography #wildlifephotography #birding
🪶Pacific Wren — Got a couple of birds this weekend that I’ve been trying to get for a while now. This is the first one… #birds #wildlife #photography #wildlifephotography #birding
🪶Savannah Sparrow, such a beautiful bird! #birds #birding #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography
🪶Beautiful birds which I was unable to to justice to with my camera. Tjanknfil to see them though! Varied Thrush, American Pintail and American Wigeon. #birds #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography
🪶Say’s Phoebe — another fun pose from this gorgeous little bird. Had fun watching it hunt insects on the wing in Eastern Oregon just off the Columbia River. #birds #wildlife #photography #wildlifephotography
🪶Great Blue Heron munching on some heron yum. Watched this bird catch three prey in 5 minutes, through the duck week with zero visibility. Was a real treat. #birds #wildlife #photography #wildlifephotography
🪶Black-crowned night heron shot in Hawaii over the summer. Love the red eye! #birds #wildlife #wildlifephotography #photography
🪶Green-winged Teal — 2024 bird species count sits at 19 after a 90 minute visit to a refuge. And I’m sure I missed some! #birds #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography
🪶Heading out to Baskett Slough tomorrow morning for the first birding of 2024! Took this photo about 2 months ago, but tomorrow will be much colder, gray, and wet. Perfect! :)
🪶Bald Eagle — even the symbol of freedom has a bad hair day from time to time. Took this in Cottonwood, AZ. #birds #wildlife #photography #wildlifephotography
