I spent SO much time as a kid trying to work out how penny-tolerant a train would be. May have helped lead to my eventual career, even.
If this weren’t a novella, I would taken more space for Nat and Ian’s attitudes to evolve, it feels a bit abrupt, and the more I look at that last paragraph the less I like it. But this was reworked late, when I had a good handle on the characters, and I’m happy with the banter. See you on May 25th?
also a shout out to Broadway Bicycle School broadwaybicycleschool.com – some of the details of Nat’s shop evoke theirs, and that “better than new” feeling is a specific tribute to them. Thanks for keeping me safe, folks.

Nat doesn’t know that, but under less tension about the ride, she mellows a bit, and the two banter a bit. One of the most fun things about writing for Clover Hill was collaborating...

if you’re just joining us, last time (Ch 5) Ian (he/they) dropped their bike off at Nat (she/her)’s shop and kind of made a DEAL of not contributing to her fundraiser, and Nat’s day was worsened by a stormy encounter with an ex /1 books2read.com/b/mdqaRR

I don’t know how much cardiac or neurological damage the virus did to me in January, but I sure as shit don’t want to risk more if I can help it. And wastewater data has been the best tool for me to understand and mitigate the risk of travel, being forced to return to office, etc. /end rant
The longer we drag this out, the longer the virus has to evolve new variants, and there’s no guarantee they won’t be as worse. And especially as more of the population goes unvaccinated/unboosted, every infection still rolls the dice on Long COVID.
My interpretation (ob disclaimer: Not a Dr, but good with data analysis) is that the current dominant variants result in fewer hospitalizations/deaths and infections may be asymptomatic or showing only minor symptoms. Immunity from vaccinations clearly helps. BUT...
People may point out that mortality and hospitalization levels are much lower than in 2020, so wastewater is not an absolute indicator of severity. True. But it is the ONLY indicator that functions independent of testing/treatment.
So the spike of infection we recently had this winter* was roughly 3 and half times WORSE than in March 2020 / throughout the lockdown. And at no point since late spring / early summer 2021 have the levels been as low as they were then.
*The one I finally failed to dodge, not that it matters
Graph of COVID-19 wastewater detection in MA US since March 2020. Ignoring winter 2021/2, which seems to be an extreme outlier, I added a line which shows that peaks in spring 2020, winter 2020, late spring 2022, winter 2022/3, and winter 2023/4 closely approximate a linear increasing progression
god DAMN it
News: Biobot is sunsetting its COVID-19 wastewater public data visualization platform.
While Biobot will continue to publish their contextualized weekly respiratory risk reports, this represents another decrease in data transparency, and a step in the wrong direction.
"get your guide"? i've bee trying to decide if i think it's really the toto song or just a close coincidence
JFC. I can’t imagine having the gall to say that to anybody. Like, I have heard some stuff directed at women with careers who put them on pause to have a kid that is appalling, but I never heard anybody say THAT.
i’m not saying the artist INTENDED this image processing operation to reveal a horned demonic figure, but I am saying I’ve seen a lot of heavy metal album covers
TIL that in desktop bsky the "View full thread" links support "Open in new tab." You're welcome.
I think I keep excising that from my memory, and then I remember and it's like "damnit we should have figured out things about JW sooner...."
on the other hand, what if you just told us and let us put the thread together as we can?
Goddamn, I hate the passive aggressive non-apology, but i guess everything DOES have its season. "I'm sorry my moral outrage made you uncomfortable and possibly put you at risk of becoming aware of your own biases..."

hopefully they can both grow up a little bit in the next couple months 🤣
i would check it out, but it might not be a good fit tonally (it reminded me of china mieville if that's useful)
Jinn-bot of Shantiport doesn't have ALL those elements but it has a bunch. but also elaborate fight scenes + monsters.
because C.L. won't say this, but someone should: C.L. >has< followers because their posts are thoughtful, interesting and respectful, and because their books are fantastic. there's no secret system to game here like X.
i hate to say this, but... staples? one with a really long throat that works great for assembling zines
maybe it won't pass the house, maybe it will be vetoed, maybe there will be a convenient stay on enforcement while it works its way through appeals
maybe i'll never seen my parents again
but I'm relieved on yr behalf that Shawn doesn't need a vet visit rn
this is HIGHLY RELATABLE CONTENT is what i'm saying
C. is on single-protein food which seems to be helping a lot but also I am her secondary human and she hasn't seen the primary human in months & I'm worried she may feel permanently abandoned every time I go see the primary human for a few days (we get daily photos from our caretaker at least)
I have tickets to go see my folks in July & then go to the Merge Records show with dear friends and I don't know what to do.
I mean, she's not depicted roasting (albeit with a strange calm) in the literal fires of Hell and/or soaked in blood, so i'm not sure what the deal is
i thought it was so fun, and such a fantastic idea for ... well ... any book with a really solid timeline?
i’m not sure if that’s the same stuff I had but god that stuff was awful. but by the time you’re reading this, you’ll be the through the worst of the experience. you got this!

oh wow! you did see that your Santa Pageant readalong was absolutely my direct inspiration? ❤️
i'd never be able to see my parents again.
NC is trying to make wearing a mask at all illegal with no exceptions.. except for groups that obtain prior state permission. With the KKK being an explicitly stated example. 🫠
The bill will be voted on as early as next week. If you live in NC, this is a good time to call your reps.
may I suggest? Hill house, not sane, took of its bra and cookie crumbs fell out. It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a bra once removed, shall evidence crumbs of some small confection.

Ian’s bike will be ready on May 19 so #SpokenForReadAlong picks up then if you want to ride along. And I’d love to not just be talking to myself if you’re reading/have read the book (or decided not to) and have thoughts (positive or negative)
I was thrilled with how very negatively Horrible Cheating Ex was received by beta readers. I’ve been in the periphery of people who use their attractiveness as a weapon, and drew on second-hand experience. If there’s a second edition, I’ll tighten up the cash-flow management talk. /5
I think it was a bit of a lazy choice to have Ian surprise-inherit their house - I needed a way to get them to Clover Hill, not have known Nat before, and it was expedient, but maybe too familiar a device. I still like the stuff about home renovation philosophy though. /4
