youtu.beThat’s amazing
"The female parts are a little underwritten so far sir"
How did I miss this??.. masterful
This is the treatment they should have gone with.
I have a relative who works in county-level government who found herself unable to watch Parks & Rec because the public meeting scenes just hit too close to reality.
This is exactly why it’s so hard for me to watch The Office. Hits too close to home from working in too many awful offices.
I can't watch Abbott Elementary for the same reason.
Makes me feel like university presidents spend entirely too much time fundraising/kissing donor ass.
Which to be fair is one hundred percent the main job description
Which is why they should stay far away from congressional inquiries...
I’m sure they wish they had. Worst high profile jobs in America right now - university president, Speaker of the House 🤣
Confirmed.

prada.substack.comPublic university presidents have been better than private at this on average (with some unfortunate exceptions ofc)
My kid told me that the UC Riverside campus police confiscated a rifle and ammunition earlier this week, every sign was they prevented a campus shooting. You know what they weren't doing? Breaking up an encampment and beating the protestors.
This seems like it was a real close call too, the story is they found a journal describing plans for a massacre. They were able to get a warrant and arrest the gun owner. But people are still on edge, some classes remote and low attendance in person. Glad the police were not busy with repression.
Here is the story... I overstated it saying there was a journal describing plans, but they found something that was violent and disturbing: insideucr.ucr.edu/announcement...
The UC Riverside Police Department on Monday night secured an arrest warrant for a UCR student in connection with the recent discovery of an assault rifle in a campus residential building. The student...
insideucr.ucr.eduNah it's about endowments big vs little
The reliance on which skews heavily along the public/private axis, yes
Alas, I wish IU followed this pattern, but whitten is a fucking ghoul
Indiana and right-wing politician university presidents, name a more iconic duo 😑
those are the faces of people who have to explain that no, we're not going to be putting a disclaimer in biology textbooks that some believe the earth to be 6,000 years old, stop asking in at least two town hall meetings a semester
*For the 3rd time this month
it really is underappreciated that whatever one thinks about what is happening on campus, these presidents are paid 7 figures and they're absolutely shit at their jobs
so many of 'em don't give two shits about education either (one place I interviewed the president was a former auto exec with zero background or interest in education), which you'd think would be disqualifying
Only disqualifying if the goal is to actually educate. When the real goal is to grow the university's endowment through any means necessary, though...
I can tell you that Yes that is the #1 job of a University President. They are very far removed from anything having to do with students and professors. That's just how it works.
Totally. I worked in administration (IH/HSE) at UTSW for a few years, never having worked at a university/hospital, and it was a real eye opener that immediately dissuaded me from continuing on that path. lol
They're been bad at this recently too is the thing
It’s the endowments. The presidents are the window dressing and the caretakers of a donor class and a sizeable asset. That it funds education means that the university is simply the philanthropic arm in service of the investments, the real estate, and the next $50M building dedication.
I've had to say this a couple of times but I don't think people understand, The president is mostly there to protect the endowment. When push comes to shove they will abandon every student before they abandon the endowment.
Having been to several colleges, this sort of shit is unsurprising and why I am a proud dropout.
That’s because their jobs are to continue the donor funnel, not administration.
They're very good at their jobs, you're just misunderstanding what their job is.
No i think they are shit at their real jobs too
There’s a weird frission when you understand how horrible what the GOP is doing to academia, but also have worked in academia long enough to know that culture needs Augean Stables levels of reform.
Or they are doing a really good job at what their actual job is, which there is little resemblance to what we think it is or to what it should hey.
*should be.
nah i meant they are shit at their actual job, not just the job we are supposed to think they are doing. Shafik has fucked up and pissed off everyone, whatever boss she is serving
Maybe the high pay (and the sources it comes from) is a big part of the problem.
the problem is that the job they are hired for (executive fundraiser) is not the job anyone else thinks they're supposed to be doing (actually managing the university)
I don’t think Shafik, for example, is likely to be doing a great job with the fundraising either
If their job is only executive fundraising, then they should not have the ability to decide when to call police onto campus.
I guess it depends on what their jobs actually are
Which they still have for some unfathomable reason.
for reference to the university of california system, campus chancellors earn in the mid-6 figure range, and the system president (all 10 campuses plus associated units) earns just under $1 million—running the fourth branch of California state government basically
ucannualwage.ucop.edu/wage/
Just me, and you, sitting in our little homes can figure this out---just as we've figured out what trump and trumpist fascism has been up to from the beginning. And just as clearly see what Biden needs to do to win.
Nobody who is paid 7 figures is shit at their job. They are good at what they and their donors think their job is.
the very clear and well practiced "I see you are an unhinged lunatic, but I must sit here in what appears to be a thoughtful silence" squint of pain
Also unlike university presidents, public school leaders - particularly teachers - have been openly vilified by Republicans for many, many years. The pretense changes, but the motives remain constant.
this is accurate- my dad was on the school board when I was a student in the small town district- he went back a year or two ago to comment at a hearing where they were considering banning some books and basically said this craziness is nothing new. The board voted against pulling the books.
Yes.
Also, unlike the Uni Presidents....these guys were probably not coached in advance by an East Coast BIG LAW lawyer, who taught them to say technically correct but insane sounding lawyer things instead of normal human answers.
True…
good for them school their asses
University presidents are generally university presidents because they are skilled at sucking up to rich donors, which, as you point out, is a different skill set.
Yes it's agreeing with the most unhinged people imaginable so they will give you money
And legislators. They tend to do a lot of elbow rubbing with them as well.
I’m losing my mind at the thought that university presidents ever took Congressional Republicans seriously. *This* is one of the people who is very, very concerned about antisemitism. In my dream world somebody brings this up in a hearing
I have never before seen such a pair of "fuck you, buddy" expressions in my life
Ain’t that the truth
This is a great point. University admin are so sheltered from the real world that they don’t even interact with their own faculty and students let alone “normal” people. Their social interactions consist entirely of meetings and fund raisers.
As a faculty member I've never had trouble getting my chancellor to interact with me, but that's a pretty low bar for "real world"
it's so hard to get the ivory for the towers nowadays
But how easy is it for a random member of the public to yell at your chancellor?
Education leaders have to sit through public meetings where virtually anyone can yell at them for virtually any reason.
Also, they don’t see their job as primarily serving wealthy donors.
Because university president is just a cushy CEO position where your only job is protecting the endowment.
Public workers are actually beholden to the public and getting ground into the dirt by stupid questions is just a daily thing.
Attended a school board meeting in fifth grade about the closing of my school. One unhinged mother went on an extraordinary rant, got interrupted by a lunch lady in attendance who corrected her. "Shut up, Page!" screamed the mother at the lunch lady. The principal gave a master class in moderating.
Actual educators handle themselves and defend their profession better than glorified hedge fund managers whose first instinct is to knuckle under to power.
These are also people who are used to incredibly contentious union negotiations. They tend to be high conflict by nature and forged in the fire of unhinged public and negotiations.
And wouldn’t you know that the people who lead public schools tend to be educators, while the leaders of private colleges are increasingly business leaders and private investors. Interesting who can actually speak to the issues at hand when it comes down to it.
Our local community college board pushed out the experienced admin and brought in a retired bank manager. He lasted about 6 months, now they are recruiting again...
Not in NYC. Banks happens to have an education background, but no chancellor since Bloomberg has been in any way subject to approval after their appointment. And most are just political puppets who hand out corrupt contracts.
So true. Most folks would not believe the crazy that passes for normal at their local school board meeting.
Every one of those people has likely faced off against right wing nut jobs protesting COVID mask mandates, "Critical Race Theory", transgender bathroom policies, you name it. Not to mention all the crazy shit that goes down on a daily basis in your average American school district.
(My sister worked as an assistant superintendent for one of the larger school districts in Illinois. I have *stories*.)
That’s my Board of Ed President 🤩

www.nytimes.comMy late wife graduated from Berkeley HS, I'd agree that the Berkeley superintendent would have seen and heard it ALL! Same for NYC...
They probably think of themselves as educators not hedge fund managers or defense bureaucrats.
Also 'taking unhinged questions in public from the most people imaginable.'
So, based on this, the schools of higher learning seem to be the homes of lower ability.
Only at the “highest” levels.
I think Congress has many of the most unhinged people imaginable.
They're now ranting about antisemitism, having done everything in their power to kill DEI. Only the unhinged would think that makes sense.
Okay sure but they all immediately agreed that "from the river to the sea" is antisemitic so I'm not that impressed
at least Silvestre and Ford qualified it. and the guy asking was clearly gunning for a clip to spin out of context. maybe sidestepping the trick question was a better move idk
They are elected, often the best most respected people. By contrast, American university presidents are typically just social climbers who got their jobs by sucking up to donors and the ruling class.
Not the NYC Chancellor. Not since Bloomberg was mayor.
Sorry, my comment was nonsensical
And get pushback from government figures trying to cut their budget all the time. David Banks bringing extremely NYC energy to this hearing.
But also, very important, they really did their homework before arriving, which the U pres did not. They had numbers, actions taken, and records.
I suppose this is true. University presidents interactions with donors usually don’t involve taking questions.
Former board president here.
Thankless, stressful job. People are next level crazy.
I’m keeping my “former” status.
Banks, from NYC, is a leader.
Ah, you think madness is your ally? You merely adopted batshit. I was born in fucknuts. Raised in it.
Heh
File under "Stuff I never wasted to be good at".
I was at a public meeting where Banks spoke recently and can confirm that this is pretttty accurate.
When you don't try to placate bad faith actors, bullies, and "fight back" with the truth, you usually come out on top. The Republican committee members dont care a fig about antisemitism. They just wanted their on-camera "gotcha."

“I stand up not only against antisemitism,” Mr. Banks said. “I stand up against Islamophobia and all other forms of hate. You can’t put them in silos.” 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Don’t get too excited. In his op-ed, he is very focused on raising awareness of the Holocaust (good) but only barely mentions Islamophobia and doesn’t say anything about that being a focus in curriculum. And at my school, for example, Islamophobia is a far more prevalent problem.
Sorry, you mean they have a backbone?
Man I would kill for a picture of me looking as tough and great as those principals do in that photo.
They don’t have any Buffer from the public
LOL, that's for darn sure, the long running culture war against public education and equity in education has prepared these folk for the latest onslaught.
This was my immediate reaction when I read the article.
Yeah, they know how to deal with children who are throwing tantrums
Good. I hope that other people copy their behavior. These modern reTHUGliKKKlans are not serious people. They're only holding these hearings in an attempt to weaponize antisemitism and edukators should refuse to be pawns in their asinine game
As a teacher... Yes
That's true. But they don't have to boot lick donors.
This look.
Absolutely appropriate for the situation.
Public school administrators get to deal with idiots every day. Ivy League college presidents are insulated. Therein lies the difference.
Also, many fewer MBA's weighing their brains down.

Surprised because why the hell do universities have investments?

People, both here and in the Bad Place, have shitty opinions on how these zones should be used, where they should be located, and whether the encampments are in violation of university policy on the use of these zones. Most of these shitty opinions do not reference the supposed policies.
