I run it Pihole inside an Ubuntu VM on my TrueNAS system and for a reason I can't figure out the VM seems to crash once a month.
One of the main issues I have with hosting my own DNS server is that it's responsible for 95% of my internet outages

Ubuntu Server is good for selfhosting, but I run it with a VM, on Hyper-V haha.
I run Proxmox VM software on them and pretty much cut a VM for whatever I need
Update on the home server. Was having trouble Truenas Core and VMs so I updated to Truenas Scale. Windows VM is up and running. Was even able to get the DGPU to be isolated for VMs.
Unfortunately was idea of using a VM as a stream rig has failed as the capture card will not work in the VM.
I've been running 15.6 in a VM for about a month and I can't believe it's not considered stable at this point. 😀 Earlier this morning, I moved it out of a VM and it's now my daily driver. This is going to be an AWESOME release!

Installed Ubuntu on a VM on my Mac today, solely for the purpose of installing Steam on it to run Dwarf Fortress using Windows emulation. Jesus Christ.
I went from Windows+Cygwin to Windows+Ubuntu Virtual Machine to dual boot Windows+Ubuntu to Ubuntu+Windows VM. Since I don't really need full processor/memory for any Windows task, it made sense to run it as a VM. I almost never use Windows anymore, so I usually borrow a machine if needed.
I don't think it's possible to use Asahi in a VM as it's specifically made only to run *on* Apple Silicon macs. You can, however, run any other general distro inside of a VM!
this is not my definition at all lol, you can run a container or VM on almost anything. i meant postmarketOS, ubuntu touch, and GNOME mobile
Containers run using the underlying OS resources. So, for instance, you can’t run a Windows container on Linux. The way around it is to run a Windows VM on Linux that hosts the Windows container. In this case it would make more sense to just run the VM.
My ideal goal would be to use Linux for almost everything, and run a Windows VM when I can't get away with that.
Going to check out Accessible-Coconut on a VM in a bit, I'll let y'all know how it goes. It's an eyes-free Linux distro based on Ubuntu using the GNOME screen reader (Orca) plus magnifier options, and I *think* color filters. Haven't set up the VM yet to see. After I eat tho ;)
Honestly I wish I could just not have vm but I can’t figure out how to turn it off. Clearly I need a zoomer to help me.
Phil Karn figured out that the backup password was BKUP and punched a deck of cards to run VM on top of VM on the 370 using that password.
got DOSBox-X all setup on my new laptop, downloading bunches of old games to play on it! if you've got any recs for DOS games i should check out lmk. i wanna figure out a way to play some old windows games on ubuntu if i can, might just need to run a vm. unreal tournament 99 calls to me
Request for advice. I've used Multipass on my M1 MacBook Air for over a year to host an Ubuntu VM I build with cloud-init. A few months ago Multipass refused to start my VM and reports its state as "Unknown". I haven't been able to fix this problem and I've considered switching to UTM or QEMU.
good for them! native docker/compose support is a major reason I migrated my truenas node to a stock ubuntu node.
Also whilst QNAP do have a Plex app available I don't really trust it and I'm pretty sure it's not regularly updated so I just run an Ubuntu VM with Plex installed on it instead.
New blog post: Running Pihole on a VM in Hyper-V.

I started with Ubuntu around 2004 or so. Then discovered Mint, and mostly run Debian based distros when I do run Linux. Oddly, got a VM of GhostBSD for tinkering.
i got too tired of playing tamogotchi with the Debian VM/Docker container on my 2016 MBP home server. do you run anything like nextdns or pihole?
I did set up a trueNAS box and it works fine *as a NAS* but none of the “app” stuff behaves. At least I can’t get Plex to run for shit, so I ended up just putting a windows VM on it that runs Plex instead. But, I haven’t been able to get it to see the Quadro to use for hardware acceleration. 😡
