Was going to write "elect me and I promise to be in power for at least five years". Like haha, five years, one parliamentary term, etc... Then I remembered that I would be outperforming any Prime Minister of the last eight years.
Yup, that's what I did with this one before the laser died! Managed to get quite a few more years out of it by carefully positioning it on its side.
Oof, and here's me thinking I had bad luck after my spindle's ball bearings popped out in the first two years. ;_; I say this with the absolute greatest of respect for the console and its incredible legacy, but good lord were some of those early models badly made.
Played a bit of the first revision of this remake on the PSP. It's a good time! I'd like to go back and finish it someday. Shares most of Star Ocean 2's mechanics and its general look, so definitely a good next stop!
She does this sort of stuff randomly all the time because she knows I'm a big kid and it makes me smile. Such a sweetheart. <3
Bonus points for turning something ugly and potentially harmful into something beautiful.
Have realised over the years how much I love old, broken things being repaired and made new. Everything from restoration videos to simple repair and huge, gorgeous architectural projects like this. There are genuinely few things that make me so happy as seeing something get a new lease on life.

Aw, yeah, I hear outside of a few late revisions, the chonkers are all prone to failure due to cheap plastic parts in the drives. I had one die on me as a kid, and my other one finally died a few years back. Second one did well to last so long, though, as it played hundreds of hours of burned CDs.
Had to use an extender cable, as the ribbon cable for the PSOne laser is much shorter, but made me so happy to see my beloved old console working like new stock again.
Definitely! I'm starting to run out of shelf space now for my many consoles, so the extra real estate would help.
Another nice thing about the PSOne is that the lasers are generally more reliable. I replaced my broken grey laser with a PSOne one, and it's perfect. Gives it an interesting look, too.
Always kind of wanted one of these. <3 The classic grey PS1 is where all my nostalgia is, but I remember this little thing blew my mind at the time, and I got so excited when they brought out the screen and battery pack, and suddenly portable PS1 was a (not very practical) reality.
(And yes, I know that there are those of every vulnerable minority who do work to reach out to the other side with the hopes of educating and changing minds. It's good work and I appreciate it. Just... not really sure we should ever be framing it as an expectation)
Feel there's a huge amount of privilege baked into all the discourse that we should work to reach the other side rather than isolating ourselves. Like yeah, there's value in trying to build bridges, but for many, withdrawing from certain spheres isn't a matter of comfort - it's about actual safety.
Also breaks my brain that you finished the game first, but your completion date is one day later. The magic of timezones.
Leon is so cute! I could never bring myself to give up Dias after my first playthrough, but he was my favourite the one time I played as Claude. Really need to get this remake. Have so many good memories of the original game.
Haha, I like that we both took time to savage that one godawful track. Truly painful.
Came through to the bedroom to get my phone and found that my partner had tucked in our LED lamps nice and snug. Think I'd better not disturb them.
Definitely! I think Capcom could have drawn stronger comparisons with their survival horror titles, as I think they inform so much more of its design than the earlier BoF games do. Pushing the "survival RPG" angle harder would have simultaneously been good for business and genuinely informative.
Feel like if people had gone in expecting something that was to Breath of Fire as Crystal Chronicles or Final Fantasy Tactics are to Final Fantasy, it would have gone down far better at the time.
I think Dragon Quarter is a masterpiece, but I feel they should have worked to sell it as a spinoff rather than the next mainline title. Removing the number V from the title in regions outside of Japan was a good start, but I don't remember it being made very clear just how different it was.
Overflowing emotions are what I have after hearing this for the first time in so many years.
Today trans people are at fault for... *rolls dice* ...the post office scandal.
Remember we used to sit together at the same computer keyboard, with my controls mapped to one half and his to the other. Still have my custom keymaps for it burned into muscle memory.
My younger brother and I had already played Secret of Mana co-op, and I remember our excitement when we stumbled upon "Secret of Mana 2". We found and started it on New Year's Eve one year, and it became a tradition after that for a few years for us to start a new playthrough every New Year.
An incomplete version of FFV. I think the full translation was actually available by then, but downloaded an incomplete version from somewhere by accident, and our internet was slow and limited enough that I couldn't easily go find a full one. First one I finished was definitely Seiken 3, though.
Can't believe autocorrect gave me "it's" instead of "its". You let me down, man.
"Years have passed since the calamity... Today I discovered what I believe to be one of the great artistic works of the old world. It's origins are unclear, but its richness of expression is unparalleled. Oh to meet this talent, and to ask him but one question! But alas, he is gone, and I am alone."
When the final days are upon us, only Don-chan shalt remain. And lo, his drum beat will be as the dying pulse of the world. And even as the world burns, his smile shalt never falter.
Thanks! It's the second game off a list I made of 24 unplayed games I own that I want to play in 2024. Starting strong so far. <3 www.completionator.com/Stack/View/3...
Yeah, I think the worst thing media can be is boring, and I'll always take something flawed that takes big, memorable swings over something safe but dull. For all its clunkier elements, I can guarantee I'll remember multiple parts of this in 20 years. Plenty of good games where I can't say the same.
Surprised it came out when it did on the Wii, honestly. Feels much more like something you'd expect to see out of the modern indie scene, I think. But glad that it exists, and it's a lovely little oddity to have in the console's library.
I'm really enjoying! Gameplay-wise it's kind of a hotchpotch of ideas that don't always feel fully realised, but atmosphere, mood, and aesthetics are a 10/10. <3 One of those games where a few elements of the package are so strong that the stuff that is less impressive doesn't feel like it matters.
"What do you do?" has exactly the same energy as "what you say?" from Zero Wing, and I love it.
Suggestions for stories include "a final message to a loved one", "words of gratitude to a parent", "final bitter words offered up to a dying world", and "frustration at a promise unfulfilled". Think I've seen examples of all of them ingame already. ^^
Took a look with Wayback, and apparently a lot of the graffiti strewn around the environments was written by fans as well. Was a little drive they did encouraging submissions. Winners got their names in the credits. The items attached to the stories were picked by applicants too.
Had no idea this was the case. Explains the convincingly distinct author voices across the different memories, but what a sweet idea. Like Lost Odyssey if it had crowdsourced all of Kaim's memories. :'D
Oh hey, that's really cool! Had no idea people were still working to improve Popstarter. Was an impressive achievement for Sony to not only get PS1 software emulation going on PS2 but for its compatibility to be as good as it is despite only being designed for one game. Found it super-interesting.
I want the logo for Sega's lost hit arcade game Beast on a t-shirt.
There, now at least twenty bots will be preparing merchandise.
Really love the little memories attached to the items you collect in this game, but this one attached to a game cartridge resonated in particular, as someone who gave silly names to her characters all the time as a kid. :'D
