Interesting. A lot of the CCs near me are going or have gone tuition free (I got a flyer in the mail two weeks ago advertising this for the one closest to us) but I haven't heard about any pushback from the CSUs or UCs.
As stated, that sounds like a question your IR office could answer. Digging in to the "why" would of course be more work/fun
So how is giving an F better? I feel like I am not understanding something.
If the policy is you can't retake it to improve the D and continue, that to me is a problem with the policy not the D grade.
Unsure about the research, but I have seen some instances where a D can be used to give credit, but not satisfy prereq requirements. So it's sufficient in a terminal course
E.g. A D in Calc 1 could signify they learned some Calc, but likely aren't ready for Calc 2. But sometimes that's enough.
The goal is to promote automaticity with arithmetic, which enables students to learn other math more easily because of reduced cognitive load. Its distressingly common in US elementary schools.
But yeah, this important goal can be accomplished in other non-traumatizing ways.
Pretty sure it was and is illegal (except maybe in Iowa?) for kids to start working younger than all of us geriatric millenials did
I am guessing you had severe space restrictions here, but you really managed to capture a whole lot of the nuance in that short space!
Looking forward to reading the new book too :)
But what speaks to me more is what our students tell us over and over again about how those tests made them feel--how this damage sticks with them and impacts their view of math and if they are capable of doing math a decade or more later.
I think your piece is pretty spot on. There is an interesting ed psych question about the construct and causality and that is hard to answer. It's worth noting that there are many other forms of anxiety at play here too (e.g. test anxiety).

www.linkedin.comThere is a privacy setting that supposedly prevents people from seeing your info because you clicked in their profile. But because I have this on, I don't get to see the 5 free people.
Didn't see it immediately, but didn't take me too long. Definitely would have missed it in real time though.
10yo: Do you know that song "🎵Tell me why...🎵"?
Me: "🎵AIN'T NOTHING BUT A HEARTBREAK🎵"
10yo: 👀
Me: I mean "yes".

If they are going to enshittify android with AI then I am going to have to look real hard at an iphone
The other day I figured out how to convince Chrome to do this by default for anything I put in the address bar
bsky.app/profile/drew...
In chrome:
1. Settings -> Search engine
2. Under "Site search" hit Add
3.
Name: Old google
Shortcut: g
URL: www.google.com/search?q=%s&...
4. Select the three dots next to it and make default
5. Now all searches in your search bar default to the "web", i.e. no extra garbage, results
Great article in Nature on mathematicians doing social justice work. I'm lucky to have been able to collaborate with several of the folks mentioned.

www.nature.comI mean, they kind of made their own list for us with a couple of those open letters.
We've been pretty happy with it. We have our numbers programmed into it so its easy for her to use, and it will dial 911 (tied to our street address).
Bluesky seems to have truncated the URL, so either copy the link or make sure it says udm=14 after the &.
We have an Ooma we got a few years ago so that our now 10yo could always reach us. It is VOIP but cheap ($10 plus the unavoidable taxes/fees). As a bonus, she uses it to call her grandparents

Same. Still hasn't been a single instance where I thought it would save me time or make my life easier.
i have to confess something. i have never, ever not once used chatgpt for anything and its literally unimaginable to me that anyone would. people everywhere whose taste and opinions i would normally trust will be like "yeah i use it for x" why? what would compel you to do that? don't answer this
Yeah, very nice! I had both half ideas in short order but it took me a whole 24 hours to put them together
I did reach that conclusion... so it feels like there are 3 possibilities: Bf7 Rf8 or Qh5. I think Qh5 gets blocked by g6. Mentioned Bf7 above. Rf8 is met by Rxf8, and while this pins the king more I don't see how it's any better than the starting position.
Hmmm, I dunno. I was thinking first
Bf7 Kf8
Bg6 Kg8
But neither Qe6 nor Qd5 are mate. Clearly feels like a winning position but I don't see it in 3... will check back in the morning after coffee and see if I can figure it out then
Yeah, I was thinking Bf7 forces Kf8, then Bh5 forces Kh8 but then what?
Oh! What about
Bf7 Kf8
Qh5 ???
Bc4
This feels a lot harder than yesterday's! Bf7 and Rf8 both feel like good moves but I don't (yet?) see how to finish it from either of those.
If I am understanding right, to construct a counterexample we need a set of 3 ingredients that are pairwise yummy but not yummy when all 3 are combined.
So I am trying to think of 3 very different flavors that might work okay in pairs, but the 3 is too much.
+1. If you want to quickly see the diversity in approaches, check out the many different abstracts for the upcoming Grading Conference. And better yet, join us June 13-15!

The grading reform community isn't a monolith. We have some beliefs in common, but lots of us focus on different areas of reform, & sometimes we have significant disagreements. Those who attack grading reform without considering this reality are not arguing in good faith.
The introduction of this paper is worth a read. And really should be mandatory rewarding for any administrator using student perceptions of instruction to evaluate faculty.

www.sciencedirect.comOh, I assumed "combat" is a verb here, not an adjective. Like we are going to fight off that nasty geometry and protect our beautiful algebra from it.
