A very rare wintering migrant here, breeding in Siberia and usually wintering in the east, the westernmost wintering area being the western shores of the Black Sea. I've been a hobby birder for 50 years and this was the first time I saw it here. 2/2
This was the only time I saw a Stone-curlew. Is a scarce and not regular migratory/wintering bird in my zone, usually of nocturnal behavior. I saw it in the strong light of a July afternoon 10 years ago. 🪶
Wintering area and diet during moult are reflected in the birds' stable isotopes and shape the body conditions of invididuals for their following breeding season
A rare broad daylight appearance by the wintering Short-eared Owl - usually a dusk-only bird, this afternoon it showed for a while in the Obs Quarry Field and on the Slopes
A stochastic cusp catastrophe model suggests that the persistence of cold and dry conditions in the wintering areas, and the warm and wet conditions in the breeding grounds, modulated local conditions and induced hysteresis through behavioral shifts to alternative wintering sites
At least 1 of the 2 Common sandpipers that have been over-wintering around Cardiff Bay is still here, pottering about yesterday on the Ely embankment. #UKbirding
My first photos of a Bonaparte's Gull from Sunday over the Potomac just a bit south of DC! They're uncommon migratory birds here. 🪶
Failed for the second winter in a row to see the mega-rare Black-throated Gray Warbler that's been wintering here, but the park is still a nice place to watch birds.
Since I've been recommending Katherine May's "Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times" to pretty much everybody recently, I figured I should do so here, too. I read this book two years ago and have just started a re-read.

I was here for the 1 AM earthquake alert. I’ve been here for countless rockets into the sea. This is the first time for leaflets and “preliminary air raid.”
right on the heels of reports of a black-throated gray warbler wintering over in grosse point
once i saw a feral cat in the empty (wintering elsewhere) tortoise exhibit
Golden Oriole wintering in Cornwall.
The only surprise is how surprised some in the birding community are.
Meanwhile in Norfolk, numbers of wintering duck, geese and swans are lower every year.
Our trajectory looks ominous and change seems impossible for most.
The Great White Egret is on the front foot across the UK right now. Every triangle on this map is a location where great egret was not wintering in the 1980s, but is now wintering. They are expanding rapidly! www.bto.org/understandin...
We have exactly 1 wintering
In November when the YRWAs were here on a massive scale, it was like hell searching for the parula
Glad the butterbutts have reduced and made this guy much more solitary and easier to track by ear
Loads of birds arriving this week, but look who else is on the wing! The first warm days of spring bring out over-wintering moths and butterflies #invertebrates
wasp found its way inside for the final week living here, assuming it wasn't just wintering in the attic. almost made it
This is a bonkers. UK is on the very western tip of Ruff's range. It's been declining here (& Western Europe) for years. Focusing on breeding further north(east) would surely be in the interests of the species given the likely continued decline here.

Plans to establish breeding Ruff at a site in Norfolk have been given the green light by councillors, despite recommendations to reject the scheme. West Norfolk councillors approved Andrew Crean's Ruf...

Didn't know that, did you?
Birds also use the Tendra Spit for nesting and wintering.
Looking for more info about the Spit, I found two photos of the wild horses and a report on a field trip by three Ukrainian scientists in 2017.
The Tendra Spit is the only place in Ukraine where a population of wild horses lives.
Back in the 5th century BC. Herodotus wrote about the ancient relict forest spits of the lower Dnipro River. The ancient Greeks also paid attention to the Tendra Spit, which is a real treasure of the reserve.
Is it a lot of migratory eagles that winter there? There was a place I used to go on the Delaware river, on the border of NY and PA, that was a wintering spot for eagles.
next time we have low rainfall here me and my friends are gonna become semi-nomads wintering in the navy yards and summering in the highlands of park slope
Redwings continue wintering locally as do Herring Gulls, but mysteriously I haven't seen any Black-headed Gulls for the past week. Usually there are 40 or so along the river and around the playing fields (2/2).
I listened to Mermaid Ave 2 a few months ago for the first time in ages when I was compiling a Wilco playlist and was reminded that Secret of the Sea is a top 5 recording of theirs, easy (here is the playlist BTW).
